Why do people buy pets and discard them?

I have seen in India people buying pets,on an impulse. They do not even care whether they can look after them or not.Once they are brought, they are not looked after properly when they loose interest.Recently I saw a family buying a puppy for their kid,and after a few months when they got transferred to another place, they discarded the dog and went away. A few neighbors felt pity for the dog and fed the poor dog and finally one of my friends took him in to her house.I really feel angry for such irresponsible people,do you?

I think the answer is they do not know what a puppy means when they buy one. Puppies may look great when you see them, but most people don't know a puppy pees and poos everywhere until the age of 5 months. Also they don't know a puppy can chew things or destroy furniture because of being bored. People imagine a puppy is a live toy. They expect the puppy to be quiet and to sit in one place until they are in the mood to play with it. But no. Puppies are living beings and they have needs. - They need to go to the bathroom and their owners must teach them where to do this. - They need to play and their owners must take the time to guide their play into one that is not destructive. - They need to know the world and they do this by biting and chewing. Their owners must be there to teach them how much is too much for biting and chewing. So people buy nice puppies and when they realize puppies are not toys, they give up on them. Shame on this kind of people!

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are absolutely right, even i have seen the same thing in many houses. As i have said, i love pets but i do not like to own them. I think people should mentally decide whether they should get pets or not and even if they get it they should vow it take full care of it. What say?

i have not met someone who was so irresponsible with pets. i know a lot of people who loves dogs and pets and they care for them really well. besides why would they buy something and discard them, especially if they bought the pet for a huge amount (dogs with good breeds does cost a lot here in manila).

I wish I could answer that question.. I don't understand people who do this. I take an animal into my family for LIFE. Mine and theirs. If I ever see someone abandoning an animal like this.. they better watch out. :)

On the day they bought the dog they are on dire needs for the happiness of their kids and as days goes on their children lost the interest of the puppies. So these people treated the puppies as an equipment for a specific purpose, at the time it no longer serve the purpose then so be it.

you sound like a kind and awesome person :) ... I hope life treats you well, and you receive many blessings. We are living in a cruel world. People gang up on others for not behaving, which is why I support and belong to the group anonymous, so people have a chance to battle bullies. However, animals are not so lucky, and they need good people like yourself. the more good people we have in the world, the more it will outweigh the cruel 'mobbers'. I am glad your friend took the puppy in. But basically, whether human or animal, people hurt those who do not 'behave'. Usually these beloved pets are dumped because they do not obey the 'rules'.

Maybe such people are hyped by the fad of pet owning and not even thinking about the huge responsibility one should cater on owning a pet. However, here in my country we do have pet shelters who will cater to pets who are abandoned and let them be adopted by other responsible pet owners. Somehow, such people that just take for granted the responsibilities on pet owning should be educated first on the out takes on owning such pets. because for me personally, i don't consider such animals as a pet but as part of my family.
