Across the commons from where I live there is an alternative school. I'm not sure what that means but I think it's for kids who have a hard time going to school and I"ve noticed quite a few pregnant kids going there. I know I see a police car there every day and wondered why. Today in the news I read that yesterday there was a stabbing in the school. One boy stabbed another one while they were working in the kitchen there. This isn't something that happens very often around here and it's very scary to me being so close to where I live. The kid lived and the stabber is of course in jail. Has anything like this happened in your neighborhood? Isn't it scary when it's so close to home?

Yes you are right alternative school is for kids who can't handle a full school day for various reasons whether it be disability, behavior, home life ect.
We have had some issues at the schools around here but nothing quite as serious as a stabbing. I think the most recent was at one of the highschools an expelled student was let into the building and was seeking out an ex-girlfriend for revenge but he was caught before he found her.

You are saddened when you hear this kind of news in the papers and on the television, but when it's right on your back doorstep it really hits home and you view it in a different way. You are right it is scary when it's so close and it really hits home, the severity of it. We have one of these schools, where children are sent where no school can control them or discipline them, they become 'rejects' and they don't know how to be handled, it's a shame in a way.

I knew someone who worked in an alternative school. It was a very rough place, and it sounded like she served more as a bouncer than as an aide or whatever it was that her job title was on paper.
I also knew someone who graduated from an alternative school. She was very highly intelligent--and very highly messed up in some ways. Of course, the latter would be how she ended up picking up something that will shorten her life expectancy.

My sister knew a boy that went to alternative school for bringing a knife to public/regular school. He had many problems and was always trying to get attention. I felt sorry for him because he was just longing for attention and no one ever gave it to him... =( I think that was half his problem. If he had parents that showed him love and attention I don't think he would have always had so many problems.

This hasn't happened in our neighborhood before, at least not that involved young kids. And I'm with you about it being so scary being close to home. I have young siblings with me, plus my mom and the men of the house are not always home due to work. I hope that these kids get the help that they obviously need ASAP. I don't really know what that institution is doing to help them but I guess we can all use the extra help.

The alternative school is not in our community but I am sure it has happened. Yes you are right a lot of students who might not graduate because of learning problems, or behavior problems are sent to these schools. There are also more and more smarter kids going to these schools because they learn a trade and can get a job right out of highschool instead of waiting to go through a few more years of college before they can find one.
