...and I really only buy clothes, toys and other accessories for my daughter at Christmas and her birthday. Granted, she gets a TON of stuff on these occasions but I don't just randomly go to the store and buy her something because she asked for it. What do you all do? Do you buy stuff throughout the year or when your kids ask, do you buy stuff throughout the year based on NEED (growing, worn out, just need more) or do you only buy stuff twice a year and make sure you've covered most of the needs/wants at once? I shop all year and hide stuff, clearance, bought from friends who sell, and I make sure it's a variety of seasons from fuzzy warm long sleeve winter stuff and jeans and boots to swim suits, shorts, and sandals. My daughter doesn't really ask for a lot of clothes or other items throughout the year because she gets about 10 outfits worth of stuff at Christmas and another 10 at her birthday along with some shoes and boots. In the spring, she might get some extra shorts and tanks and flip flops in her Easter basket with her chocolate. Occasionally I might get something because what she has is suddenly too small, but that's also why I get adjustable waists.

Just like you, I do try to limit how much shopping that I do for clothes and toys throughout the year. However, I do buy new clothes for my children for the summer without there being a special occasion. The reason that I do that is because of the fact that both of my children have fall/winter birthdays and for that reason it is really hard for me actually know what sizes they will be wearing by the time that summer comes around.

My daughter is not the "i have to have that" kind of girl. She doesn't ask for new clothes and very rarely does she ask for toys. When I take her out for the day, I don't always get her something. My daughter has plently of toys, clothes, books, etc... Her father loves to buy her things. So I made him promise that if he just has to get her something, then he needs to take her to this store named "5 Below" it's a cute store where everything cost $5 and under.

I do not really go shopping much, especially when I have nothing I need to buy. I usually go shopping only when I need to buy something. I suppose I am the one who buy stuffs based on NEED. I shop more on food, which I am always hungry while nursing my baby, I always need to eat something throughout the day. My son seldom request to buy something, perhaps since he was young, we have been telling him to buy things when we need. Sometimes I buy some groceries when they are on sale, my son told me we still have one at home, and I shouldn't buy a new one.

I mainly buy stuff based on need. At the beginning of the school year I make a point to ask the children if they need things (ie clothing), and go shopping with them if they do have things they need. But in general it's as they come to me throughout the year and say they need something, or if I notice that they need something.

My siblings and I grew up where my parents would buy us more during our birthday and Christmas. If my mom would be buying as stuff other than those occasions, well, I'd say because it was a necessity. I try to teach my kids the same. But you know ow kids are these days. If their minds are set on buying something, they would make ways of making it happen. So, if they don't have enough savings from their allowance, all they need to do is ask my mom and dad or my sister to buy it for them.
