Can cats be potty trained?

I have not tried it yet so i am not too sure but apparently cats can be trained to use the toilet bowl. have every intention to give it a tryout because the latest addition to the family is a a kitten who has yet to be toilet trained. My 2 other cats haven't any problem, because both know to go to the litter sand box to pee or poop but the kitten is not too sure yet so has decided to choose my sofa and occasionally my bed and even the porcupine beanbag as the spots to unload. AI ..yaya...! Think it is afraid to use the sand box because of the scent of 2 elder cats pee and poop in the box. I read an article a while back on how to potty train a cat, make a sand box and position it on top of the toilet bowl with a hole cut out in the middle, then encourage the kitten to pee or poop into the box, scent of the sand in the box with their own pee scent, cats are weird in that after a time they will use the box to pee or poop once they have got the message it is where they ought to do their business at. after a time they will actually visit the toilet bowl where the sand box is at to pee and poop.. 1st the sand box on top of the bowl, with a hole cut out in the middle , then gradually the cat will get the message and just drop it straight into the bowl, even after the sand box is removed..apparently the kitten will continue to use the bowl.. Imagine how much easier and convenient not to mention hygienic and money saving it is , just have to flush, no more buying litter sand and scooping cat poop daily.. BY all means, think i am going to give this training regiment a go and see what happens..hope it works.

I'm not sure about this, what if the cat tries to kick the sand afterwards, and instead falls in. Though cats can apparentely be intimidated quite easily by other cats, so maybe this little one needs its own space. I read that somewhere, can't remember how, when, where or even why, but I did.

It is true that cats are like other animals marking their turf with their own scent, and in my case , although the territory is quite small , my bean bag is the kittens turf that it has claimed to itself marked with it's scent ,and even the elder cats seem to respect that and not approach the bean bag and kitten is Lord of the bean-bag, it likes to nap on one side and scent it on the lower side. As for the kitty falling into the bowl , i m sure it can climb back out, it is not that small sized as like when it was just born , if so ,i won't dare to let it near the toilet bowl cos it is small enough to be flushed and can fit in the pipes...i actually saw it on you tube, a potty trained cat pooping or peeing into the toilet bowl after few months training with the litter box set up on top of the bowl,so darn cute to watch

Funnily enough the day after I left my comment my own cat made a strange squeaking noise, run out of the room, and into the bathroom, and perched precariously on the edge of the toilet seat. I wondered if maybe your theory that this could be done was right, and I was being proved wrong.

I have never really thought about potty training any type of animals, especially a cat. I just figure they go outside to do what needs to be done or use the litter box when they feel the need. I guess that it could be possible to potty train a cat. Cats are a very independent animal. It could take some doing but if you can potty train a child, then why not a cat?

Independent is right , but if like me ,staying in an apartment on the 12th floor, have to somehow get the cats to at least use the litter box inside the apartment..coz there is no outdoor alternative and unlike dogs you can tie on a leash and walk them around in a park, cannot do that with cats so neccessity needs the potty training more than anything.

i am not really sure about this, as i have no experience in taking care of cats. I think all animals, or pets are capable of being trained. i remember there was this animal trainer and he trains several animals, like pigs, birds, and monkeys... Just to share, i am not a hundred percent sure, but my ex boyfriend had 2 white cats in their home (the one where he lives with his parents) and he had them trained to poop and to take a leak in their bathroom. though they will be doing it in the bathroom floor, but at least they are not doing it anywhere in the house. Drawback was when they aren't cleaning it right away, some cats really have foul smells!

That may be a good start for the toilet training of my kitten, 1st using bathroom floor then gradually shifting it to the toilet bowl,, cats are harder to train than are dogs although i do agree that all domestic pets can be trained, just depends on the appropriate methods that they will respond to. Just wish somehow i can hasten the process, am getting flustered by having to wash bedsheets and beanbags covers and sofa cover so often. It is embarassing when very close friends who come over to my apartment remark that my house smells like a toilet because the little kitty hasn't got it yet that it is suppose to do P n P in a properly gazzeted area...
