Reading the good ol' fashioned way: opening a book.

I get that a lot of people enjoy reading form their kindle or online now. I even understand why. I however, still like reading the good ol' fashioned way by opening a book. I guess I just can't get into reading from electronics. I still prefer to get a book and turn the pages and read it the old fashioned way. I mean I don't have to worry about batteries going dead I can read anytime I find the time and not having to wait for anything to charge and sometimes (depending on the book) it's much more convenient to just carry around the book. I mean there are a ton of reasons as to why I prefer reading from an actual book but that's just a couple of reasons. Am I the only one? Or is there other people out there that still prefer to read the actual book instead of from electronics?

You mean, reading a traditional, printed book? That's my preference too.Like you,I too love to read printed books.Reading printed books has many advantages that you have already mentioned in your post. But they have one disadvantage also.If you have a home library of your own,you need sufficient space to keep your books safely.I have a home library of my own.The number of books in it has been continiuously increasing and now I lack space. By the way,you are absolutely right.Buying a book, feeling it in your hand and then reading it is a pleasure of its own and this pleasure can only be felt, not described.

That sucks. Sometimes there are ways to conserve space. I have 2 dressers that double as book shelves I use them mostly for movies and random stuff. They have shelves that go over top of them. The shelves are on top of the dresser so they only take up some wall space. You could also consider putting boxes of books under your bed if you have the room. Just some ideas. I have several books but as I said they only take up my book shelf. I have more than a lot of people I know though. I like reading books over again too which is why I keep my books. I have went and bought books I read that I got from the library because I loved them so much.

Yes that's exactly what I mean. Reading from a traditional book. I don't buy many of my books. I get them from the library. I mean I have bought several books over the years and they do take up some space but not as much as if I had actually bought every single book I have read. All of mine fit quite nicely on a bookshelf I have that my father built.

Hi sissy, unfortunately I don't have any library here in my hometown. Moreover I love to read the books I like again and again.Further,my parents wanted me to be a book lover and they were too liberal in giving me money for buying books of my choice. So I now live in a house that is not spacious enough to accommodate as many as seven members of my family all of whom are adults. So I don't have sufficient space to keep my books safely. Now they are on my bookshelf and on the racks below the ceiling of my room. That's my problem.

I think it's because reading with those gadget is relatively cheaper than buying paperbacks. You are lucky if you have a lot of friends whom you can exchange books with. But there's nothing wrong with the old fashioned way, it's cool and fun. It's just costly I guess.

I don't find it too costly. I just go to the library most of the time. There I can borrow books for free. I do buy some books that I can't find there and want to read right away. I don't buy many books though. So buying a kindle would be more expensive for me. If I bought every book I read then yeah a kindle would be cheaper in the long run.

That sucks. The library is open where I live on the weekends. I live in a smaller city but it caters to college students which is why it is probably open on weekends. For me it wouldn't be cheaper since I borrow most of my books. I buy very few books. I only buy them when it's one I really want to read and it isn't available at the library. Other wise I wait. I can usually find a ton of good books to read in the mean time.

Good thing that there's a library near your place. I can't go to the library, apart from it's closed on weekends (since I read a lot on weekends because I have work) i't also like 10 km from my place, and most of the books that I like, specially the newly released books are not yet available there. Yes, Kindle is cheaper in the long run. And the battery lasts up to two months too.

Hey sissy, It is indeed true that many people enjoy reading from their kindle or ipad now. However,i don't really enjoy it. I feel more comfortable reading hard copies and it just feels much more better on our eyes. Even thought kindle has the presentation look of a paper, i think it is still different. When we read a book, it is the flipping of the page that makes it different!! thus, i totally agree that it's much better reading from a hard cover book!

I agree it is better on our eyes to read a book. It is different than reading a book. I don't think I could get into reading on an electronic device. I read enough stuff online and it just starts messing with my eyes. I don't think I could read anything electronically like I read a book. Not for that length of time. I am one to start and finish a book in a day when I have the time.

I also like actually turn the pages and I kind of like the smell. I can't quite describe the feeling of actually reading a real book. I am also not a fan of touch screens sometimes they are so temperamental.

I am not very high tech. I have my computers my desktop and laptop. I have a very basic phone not a smart phone but it does do pictures and videos so I guess that's something. I kind of cling to the old. I guess I'm not one for change. We didn't have internet until I was older and then it was dial up which took like an hour to do anything. I can say there are days I miss how simple it was before the internet. Back when kids played outside in the sunlight and read actual books, however I have to say technology has made our lives easier, although I'm not sure I will go as far as to say that's always good. It's sad when my 7 yr old nephew has a cell phone and my 11 yr old niece has every electronic device known to man including a kindle. They spend more time on a computer or in front of video games than outside playing like I used to do as a kid. I am going to try and raise my son a little differently. He is probably going to be the only elementary school student without a phone when he starts school but I can live with that. I figure as long as I can instill reading to him he wont need to rely on electronics for fun. If he decides he wants a kindle when he gets older so be it but I will cling to my books lol.

Yeah me and technology are fine but I don't have any interest of having the latest gadget and things such as the kindles, I'm pretty old fashioned I sometimes miss the days where internet didn't even exist, can't explain that either

Reading electronically is not so satisfying as from a book, I agree. Also it is much easier to check back on what you have already ready when it is just a matter of turning back the pages. I would find a detective story, for instance, rather irritating on Kindle because I could not quickly check back on the clues or all the individual types under suspicion. But maybe I just don't use my Kindle properly. Kindles are easy to slip into a handbag even if you are reading a 'large' book. I use a Kindle because I cannot easily get hold of books in English where I live.

I sometimes like too look back too, especially if I'm tired and I may have missed something. I can see why you would use it to find books in English. Makes sense. I agree too that it doesn't seem as satisfying to read from a kindle or online.

I prefer reading a real book to the e-version of it especially because it doesn't strain the eyes, doesn't run out of charge can be taken almost anywhere. Plus it makes me feel that I'm less dependent on computers or any other electronic device.

People are highly dependent on electronics. I also feel like this is one thing I don't want to depend on a electronic device for. It's nice to be able to go somewhere and just take a book instead of a computer or other electronic device. I also like that books don't strain your eyes like staring at a screen does.

Honestly, I have preference to read them on my phone because of convenience, and I do not have to carry around my book (that is our difference). Second, My preference to reading a book has been due to the availabilit of the books i read and that most of them you can already get for free. I have a lot of friends online who does give away free ebooks of the same books you have on stands, and they are free to install in your phones or tablets. I do not read all the time and when i do i sure have my phone charged as well. but you are correct, it uses a lot of the phone's battery especially that the screen is on most of the time. There were instances that when i am unable to find the book online, i would find it in bookstores, but i would buy it only when i am really interested to buy the book. he he If its free as an ebook, since most phones now on android is very nice, i would say that why not maximise it? :D

As a writer I like when people buy a print version of my book, but the reality is I sell more digital copies because they are cheaper and the buyers get the book instantly. As a reader I prefer actually holding the books.

I can understand why people buy digital copies. It's just not something I would choose. I just enjoy the feeling of having an actual book in my hand. Not to mention staring at a screen and straining my eyes doesn't seem so appealing.

Personally, I could get lost in libraries. I love reading books on the old fashioned way, to touch them and smell the pages when a book or a magazine is new. It's like a treasure. Even though, I already considered to buy an ebook reader. It seems easy to be handled and you can have several books inside. This option is a great one, if you have to travel.

I wont say I will never buy a kindle. I just can't see it happening anytime soon. I get the appeal in them but there are several things I don't like about them. I love and rely on technology as much as the next person but I think books is where I will draw the line on electronics right now. Maybe in time I will come around and get myself a kindle but I don't really see it happening. I enjoy books far too much to see myself buying a kindle. I can see using them during travel. I recently traveled by bus to Pittsburgh and took a book with me. It wasn't bad and I can honestly say bringing two books with me wasn't a big issue. I don't mind taking a few books with me it doesn't take too much space in my carry on. I mean sure a kindle would be a little easier but not to the extent that I want to buy one to use for travel. Again it's a matter of preference. I love leaning back in my seat with a book up to my nose while traveling.

I too prefer the ol' fashioned way. I only read stuff online when I don't have access to it in book format. Kindles are fine, but I don't think they ever will/should entirely replace normal books. Both types of reading experiences are valuable. I hate it when people come to my house, wonder about the "many books I have" (I don't even have that many!) and suggest a Kindle would be "more practical" (this has actually happened to me twice in the past week). Well, maybe I don't like being practical...

Yeah, I am not completely against using a kindle or such. I personally don't want to pay the money to buy one, especially when I prefer the actual book. I get that if you buy each book that comes out it's going to be more expensive in the long run, but I buy very few books. I get books from the library unless it's something I really like in which I will keep and occasionally re read later. I really hope these electronic devices don't eventually take over. I wouldn't think they would but you never know. I get what you mean about people thinking a kindle is more practical. It's a matter of preference. I wont begrudge people who want to read using a kindle instead of the book, but it's not my preference.

I have the Kindle apps in my iPad and still I have the actual books. Well, some of it and mostly from my favorite authors. I consider these my collectibles, like the ones from John Grisham. The rest, I just read from my Kindle. If you are a busy person or you are always out and about and yet you want to catch up on your reading from every available time that you can manage to scrape, I think we can all agree that a Kindle or e-book reader is really the perfect tool. But if you want to collect, like I do or if you have this enterprising streak in you that you can re-sell your old books after you are done with it, then the actual physical paper book is the better choice.

For me it's not really a matter of convenience. I will take the little bit of inconvenience and read an actual book. I mean it's not that much harder to read a book than it is a kindle. Sure it's not as convenient but not to the extent that it's a chore. Again I'll say I understand peoples reasoning. For me though it's just that I don't want to pay the money to buy an electronic device for me to read on when I don't even really like staring at a screen and reading for the period of time I would read a book. I go to the library and borrow books. I only buy books when the library doesn't have them and I really want to read them. I don't know that I would go as far to say that I collect books but I do keep the books I buy because I do occasionally like to re read them.

Many as you expected, for not all are well provided with computers there are still without one and even those with computers still prepare books to read more . Reading books is less hazardous to health.

You're right. Reading an actual book is less hazardous to your health. It is also expensive to go out and buy an electronic device in order to read. A lot of people don't have the money to buy a kindle. Many people without money rely on the library for books.

hehe, even I love to read the books the old fashioned way. I have a few friends who indeed read the ebooks in the pdf format and they are all always hung inside the phones and the laptops and computers. but for me, i am not comfortable with it. I always go for the old fashioned reading in the book as you said, I have read a couple of books online because I din't have that much cash with me to actually purchase the book, but then , by the time i finished reading it all, i felt the strain that my eyes felt and I was literally feeling so stressed out reading a book which never happens with the old fashioned method. That was the last and now i wait and save money to buy book and just get the book in my hand to read it.

I usually just go to the library and look for books. If there is a new book that is out that the library doesn't have I will buy it but I buy very few books. I usually only buy books in which I really love or can't wait to read. I also keep the books I do buy because I will re read them later after it has been awhile. I also don't want to deal with the eye strain staring at a bright screen causes.

Books, well, you call it the old fashioned way , but i would say, there was never a new fashioned way that came-in to read the books ever. The different other sources that you had mentioned here are those things which I would name them as alternatives when you are not comfortable or you find yourself comfortable in! Never the less, for me it is always, reading the book, touching it, feeling the pages in my hand and involving myself with the book is what makes my reading totally complete. The best thing about the books are, The smell of the book. With the smell of the book, one can tell how old the book has being survived. I love the smell of both the old books as well as the brand new book. I love touching the pages of the book while reading and whenever there was an instance that I have read a book which would be emotional, the book would definitely taste my tear, would see my smile in happy times and i can relate completely with my book. Only a person who reads a book and can relate to it can feel the greatness of having a book in his/her hands. It is a great feeling trust me!

I call it the old fashioned way simply because people are starting to become more dependent on electronics. Which sure they definitely have their uses. It's also been said that one day books will be replaced by electronics. I mean let's face it books are already being used less and less. Especially where research is concerned. With school research and such I have no problem looking it up online, but with reading I just prefer to have a book in my hands. I would have to agree with you and say I wouldn't feel complete reading a book on a electronic device. There is nothing better than feeling it in your hands and physically turning the pages. It's amazing how you can see what a book has been through. The most weathered Copy tells a story of its own and not just the story you're reading. I trust you when you say it's a great feeling because I feel the same thing when I pick up a book.

The library is such a wonderful place to get books, magazines, and even music and movies. I mean you have to pay for the electronic reading device itself so it's not like reading on it is completely free. The library is completely free unless you find yourself having late fines.

Hi sissy! I prefer Ebook . I think it is more accessible, free, and just not heavy as the real book. Those are just a few reasons why. To squeeze more about ebook. You can save money, why spend a dime when you can have it free? Moreover, it could save space in your house. It is just stored in memory not in cabinets lol. I guess i am just practical in some way. Lastly. I respect your point of view, just saying my idea in here. Nice topic by the way. mwah!

I respect your opinion. You have a right to it and I completely understand why you prefer it. I will say I do read for free it's called the local library. I borrow a ton of books and return them and get more. For me it would be more costly to buy the kindle when I can just go to the library and get a book completely for free. I mean sure there are late fees but only if you don't return them on time. for me it's also not about practicality it's about the amazing feeling I get when I pick up a book. I mean it's not that much more difficult to carry around a book than a kindle. I only buy books when I really want to read something the library doesn't have, and I will keep my books to re read later. I only have one book shelf of books so I don't have a bunch of space being taken up in my apartment for books.
