Money to pay the rent increase...I am very sad, so is my African Grey Parrot. Actually, she is angry at me... She wants to watch her favorite shows. She is sitting there watching the dark tv screen right now...Poor Baby. I have lived without TV before, but, I was still working then, and had many places to be...Now I am a shut in with no way to get away from these 4 walls... The worst thing is, it is going to get worse...Prices are rising on everything, yet, the government denies this and tries to convince us that it is getting better. People are having their hours cut at work because of obamderthalcare, and some are being fired. Something needs to be done about all of this...

Agreed that "something needs to be done..." but what? You and I can do precious little, other than finding more and more ways to cut expenses. If you have a DVD player, you can borrow movies from the library, or if not, there are a lot of things you can watch on the internet. A lot of regular shows are on, just a day or week late. Go to ABC or NBC or CBS and look for them. As long as you have a computer and internet connection, you don't have to do without. And there's always youtube! I've been without cable TV myself off and on. I have it now, but it really costs more than it's worth to me, so I might get rid of it again.

My TV is so old that it has no ports for a DVD player...I do own a DVD player and some DVD... I have tried to play some of the Parrots favorite shows thru the internet and computer, but my computer is too old to handle this...

My TV doesn't have DVD ports either! You should be able to borrow or rent DVDs for cheap. Libraries have them, but maybe your friends or family have some they'd let you borrow?

May be you can sell your HD 48" TV in the garage sales on Sunday to make up for the increase in rent due, at least your big screen will not need to be left in dark all the time with a new owner. Talking about rent, my new rent is up again after the old lease expire at end of this month, the office manager claim that this property company is not making money from us by charging the tenant only $550 a month on a one room apartment unit, she can barely break even after deducting the management fee and monthly expenses of the complex. I can 'truly' understand her pain of having to manage an apartment complex without the power to increase the rent on tenant.

Funny Lampar...My TV is tiny and is so old it does not even have ports to hook a DVD player to... I know that my apt. complex is making enough money...It is a tax credit complex and therefore gets HUD money...They have 4 people working in the rental office. Three are commission only. They also have 4 maintenance workers and 2 cleaning ladies...Yeah, they are really suffering...

The property company that manage the apt. complex here also receive tax credit and HUD money as claim, but their rent is no where near 'low' compare to other apt. complex in the Metropolis and funny part is that they hardly making losses annually. But every time they will say they are not making enough money whenever they raise the rent in my new lease and need to cover their expenses since the HUD tax credit and handout don't cover their annual cost of owning property. That is why the rent is always going up after a new lease is forthcoming from the office. Yeah, they must be REALLY suffering from the depression, i agree with you!!!!!

It's hard times right now. We have been making small cutbacks for the past few years, and normally live pretty frugally, so it's been difficult. Hopefully the economy will improve.

I have always lived frugally...I used to live on a small sailboat...It did not even have an engine for the first 3 years...I had to sail everywhere(not really complaining on that)! My youngest was still at 'home' then and had to be as frugal As I...We went 2 years without a refrigerator while I saved up for a good one. It was ok since we were both vegetarians...The one thing that a teenager really needs though is a phone...so I bought her a phone card once a month and she used the pay phone at the marina or the office phone...She worked in the office a lot. We did have tv though...On a sailboat you just rig an antenna and pull it up the mast...Wonderful reception and this was before the world went digital crazy...

If you have internet you can always watch tv online. There are several webpages that will stream the tv shows for you. Some of them are www.hulu.com and of course the actual web page for what ever channel you want to watch. Not to mention there are some dvd players that will let you hook up to the internet and watch shows from netflix and hulu on them. I used to do that and it was all free for me. I spent the 15 dollars to get the hdmi cord for my lap top and hooked it up so that I would not have to pay for cable. It works amazingly well. If you dont have a hdmi port or your computer you could always get a svideo cord and hook it up that way. The only problem with a svideo cord is that it will not let your tv play the sound so a set of speakers might be needed for that. Other wise you are good to go and you can watch what ever you want to watch with no problems. Good luck I hope that your bird will forgive you :).

Have you maxed out the RAM on the computer? With an old machine the RAM should be cheap but you should check to see if adding more RAM will help you.

My sister and her husband got rid of cable but they kept netflix and hulu that costs only $17.00 a month or so she says. Or you could just get basic cable with no movie channels. It would be something to watch. I am so sorry you have to get rid of things and be inside all day. It is just like me i am unemployed and hubby's pay check only pays the bills. We have noting left for fun. I guess its just life and how life is right now.

I have tried streaming video on this ancient computer and it Just does not work...I do know about Hulu and Netflix...but, it would be a waste of money...I need to get used to this anyway...Next year my rent will just go up again and it will be worst then because the only thing I have left to cut is the internet...

Hi there Adoniah, With reference to your post, mostly fifty percent of our income goes to rent. so if this expense rise up, surely it will do a great effect to our earnings. hence, we should really do an adjustments to cope up on our daily and monthly expenses.

I agree something definitely needs to be done, but there doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel, things just keep getting worse, and the government are doing no good by sticking their heads in the sand and hoping the problem goes away, well it won't. The government has responsibility for it's people. I hope you manage to get cable, I couldn't imagine going without cable or the television, and if I stayed in too much I'd get cabin fever for sure.

I know that I will be without cable for as long as I live here and I just renewed my lease...I live on a fixed income so when something like the rent goes up...something else must go away... As far a the government goes...part of it is the people's fault because they keep electing and reelecting people who are just interested in power and accumulation of money. The rest is the government's fault because government is always in favor of self preservation and growth...

It is not a matter of looking for cheaper prices, it is a matter of a fixed income that has reached its limits...
