Job bid

Knowing things are going to be real tight financially now that I have my own place, I have been hoping for another position to open at work. I even went to HR and my manager a couple weeks ago telling them I wanted to move to a different department. Although they were sympathetic, I was told there were no openings. Yesterday on my way to work, I thought, maybe today there will be a Job Bid posted, and when I got there I checked the board, and lo and behold, there was. And on my shift, which I prefer. So I signed it. I am now waiting and hoping, it pays $3.00 more an hour than what I make now. As it is I have the lowest paying job in the place. Which I don't understand, my position is vital, and I work just as hard if not harder than others who are making $15 to $16 an hour. I have asked several times why my position pays so little, and I get the same pat answers, they have to change the job description, it has to go before the board of directors, blah, blah, blah...and in the meantime, the 3 of us who have this position struggle to make ends meet. It's 3 of us, not like they can't afford to pay 3 people more money. I like my job, but I have to do what I have to do to live. If I remain where I am, after I pay my bills, I will have around $50 a week for gas and food. And that's without cable and internet. I haven't even called yet about getting them hooked up because I know I won't be able to afford it. So now I am really hoping I get this other position because then I can afford to live at least a bit comfortably. I have no one to depend on but myself, and if I want to be able to afford to live then I have to do something about it.

Good luck! I hope you'll get the job you desire. I think it is just hard for an employee to get some appraisal too early. My previous job took me a year before they increased my salary. Well, they just added 10$ on my monthly income and that's it. Does it mean that I have to do another year just to get another 10$ increase on my pay? My advice to you is just prove to them that you are worthy of that particular position you are aiming for. If you are questioning some other staff who earns more and have less tedious work than you, maybe it's a seniority based salary. They just earn more because they started early in the company so even if the nature of their work is not that heavy they get more money because the company appreciates their loyalty.

Actually I've been there quite a while. Seniority has no nothing to do with it where I work, people who started yesterday make the same as others who've been there years.

The only ways seems to be to regulary change of jobs. But there is not always a garantee that it will be better on the new job. You might earn more, but the working condition and colleagues but be worse! So be careful if you change of job and certainly when you change of company.

well, you seem to know what you want to do. that is a good thing. you can always try to seek promotion or apply for other positions in the company to be able to obtain a higher wage. it is within your right to do it. and your supervisors or superiors could understand your situation. nowadays, we try to upgrade ourselves. that's why we work hard and it looks like you have done it. you deserve a raise.

I've been trying for a promotion for the last year, the last time, I was pretty much assured I had it by my manager, then they suddenly changed the "rules" and hired someone from outside the plant. That was very frustrating for me, and disappointing. I took training for another job, working with computers, but unless one of those two people quit or get fired, I won't get that job.

I can relate to your dilemma. I have experienced having nobody to depend to but myself, I live on my own and I only rely on my salary to pay my bills and the rent. I was living in another country then, and I don't know if its pride or embarrassment but I never asked money from my parents even if I know that they will send it to me without questions. I learned to budget what little I have left after the bills and make sure that even the last penny is saved or put away. I also started looking into other part time writing jobs that I can do during the days that I have no work. It is hard but eventually things turned around and my salary was increased. Of course it happened not without hard work and being assertive to the management when I think I am already due for an increase. Good luck and I hope you get that position.

Thank you, I did get a cost of living raise increase, but even with that, I will still be running short. Two others signed the bid, so I am holding my breath. Well, if either one gets it, that means there will be an opening in the department they are in so I will try for that.
