What are the requirements to become a writer?

I have been writing ever since I was still in elementary. Right now, I have my nose buried in stories I've written before, re-reading them and reminding me of a long hidden dream I had. Is there really a course that can teach you to become a writer? And when you are prepared to become one, who do you go to to publish and sell your story? And online, what websites are good to publish stories and profit from it? I write mostly fiction and fantasy. Despite how I must sound, I'm not very good in writing. I'm still an amateur but I have good background in grammar.

Unfortunately, getting paid for fiction isn't as easy as getting paid for non-fiction online: the majority of folks want content for websites rather than creative stuff. That said, you can always self-publish or participate in a writers' community and pick up free critiques, advice and tips on places to look to sell your work. The best one I know of is Scribophile.com (really, really friendly and helpful), though there's also Authonomy.com (which is run by Harper-Collins, I think, so has direct access to a publisher).

I still have an active login at Scribophile (I think), though I haven't posted anything there for a couple of years, as I've been busy on other stuff. I've never tried Authonomy: anything run by a publisher tends to favouritism very quickly in my experience, which means the published/well-known people always get better treatment and the newbies get nothing. I may be absolutely wrong, of course, but I despise cliques on any site and Scribophile was pleasantly free of them when I was there. Unfortunately, as noted above, I haven't written fiction for a couple of years - I was publishing my two non-fiction books and trying out niche sites and stuff instead!

Oh my! This is wonderful, Spike! Yes, I think I'll start here. Thank you very much for sharing these sites. I would look into them and participate. Are you, perhaps, a member of these sites as well?

Writing is a kind of self expression for me. I love to write and I'm earning from it too. In creative writing you just have to write in style or with art. In article writing your grammar must be correct and spelling too. In textbook writing there are rules to follow. Writing is a talent too. If you love to write it will show in your writing. Just keep on writing. Along the way you will learn many things while you write. Happy writing!

Yes, I realize these things over the course of years I spent in school. Creative writing is rarely used in business and technical papers. It was like one has to switch langauge in dealing with the formal and informal writing for me. It was a bit difficult for me. I hope I can find a site where I can post my work and earn from it too. Soon.

It is very good of you that you were able to keep all the things that you have written eversince elementary days. You can study Enlgish literature if you are really serious about becoming a writer. Yes, the internet is also a very good source of information, like self-help books about becoming to be a writer. Before when i was still in college, i borrowed books about how to become a writer, i learned the basics but never really took it by heart. If you want to practice and master the art of writing, you can do that too and get paid if that is your main goal. You can try your luck in elance, odesk, or many online jobs that hire article writers.

I have saved both soft copy and hard copy. It's was difficult to let them go especially they were my thoughts converted to words and for each story they remind me of certain memories. But I don't want to be hired. I'm more like a novelist or like writers of pocket books. I'm someone who only works with what's in my own mind.

I don't know the answer to your questions. I can only encourage you in your efforts. You do have a good grasp on English grammar. I suspect that English is not your native tongue, but you have given no hint of that in your writings. Keep those creative juices flowing.

I'm an avid reader since young. And the books' language I very much prefer is American-English. The movies I love to watch are in English. You are correct that it's is not my native language. It's Filipino. As of now, I am still reading a lot of books. I make sure that I do everyday because I easily bore and a certified workaholic--especially when it comes to mental exercise. Thanks for the encouragement! I really needed it.

Well one make sure that you get your stuff copyrighted especially if you are sharing it with others. You can sell your books or stories e book style on amazon or lulu publishing, but if you are still amateur then you may want to buy other books and read them to get a feel of what others are looking for before you do anything. I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you get what you are looking for. I am a writer and I am almost done with my first book, but I have written e-books for others, so now I am doing my own thing haha. I love writing and if you love it then it will stick with you, but do a genre that you like and love, because you will be suprised how many people you can reach. Good Luck to you again. :)

I am wondering how to sell books should I become successful in publishing them. Won't I need an editor for this one? Don't I need a company to send it to for reviewing before it can be sold to public? Those are just some of the things I'm wondering about...

I think what you are doing is a good start. Since you have been writing since elementary days, so must be very good now. What course are you taking? Is it related to writing? Good luck to you, I wish you all the best to reach your dreams!

I'm an avid reader so I would like to believe that I am quite good at writing now compared to how I was ten years earlier. Right now, I am re-writing a story I made when I was still in high school. But it seems that it would take me a while to complete it considering that I have to change some things in my plot. Right now, I am taking the course of Information Technology. I know it's not a course a writer would take but I am a writer and an image artist. I am also a programmer and I wish to have a background in game designing and programming. I draw my characters while I write their story and background. I just can't seem to not give any character I draw a story of their own. Anyways, right now, I am focusing on this pic's story: http://th06.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2011/231/1/0/once_upon_a_dream__vampyre_by_cakes_and_tarts-d4772gi.jpg It's a cliche already but it ain't related to any Vampire stories around. Nah-uh! It was made before Twilight and Vampire Diaries was ever published. I hope it turns out good. In fact, I'll make sure it'll be good. Thanks for the encouragement!

There a lot of blogs so you can get tips on how to be a writer. Although it depends on what you are planning to write. Just write whatever you feel like writing. Then just edit, edit, edit to make it close to perfect.
