The kids were outside playing and a man came up wanting to talk to us about our windows. Of course they want to talk to us about our windows. You see my house is the definition of a fixer upper. I find it really annoying as though they think we don't know our windows are bad... how bout the roof? gutters? we need an electrical upgrade? a furnace that's newer than I am old? The list is long clearly.
So I was trying to get rid of the guy we have so much to pay off and finally come close to breaking even at this point. But there comes my hubby to see what's taking so long and he gives the man our information. WTH?!?! Why? We can't afford the debt. I have other debt to get rid of first before we can do this. I'd been home for 5yrs w/ no income at all, my part time income the past few yrs has helped us stay afloat but til we pay off more debt this isn't going to happen. See what also worries me is that we'll get into something that'll ball us back into debt and the poor house.

I just hope he's yanking their chains as he likes to do that to most telemarketers. However, I know we need the work to get done but we also need to be able to afford that. I have a kid who needs orthodonics soon and who's paying for that if I'm still paying off appliances from fall and dental bills for another child.

Are there any government programs that would help you? I had some work done on my house through such a program - new roof, gutters, soffit and facia, and a few other little things, like a heater in the bathroom. It's a "forgivable" loan that I don't have to repay if I stay here at least five years. If I sell the place before then, I'd have to pay back a prorated amount, depending on how long it's been since I got the work done.

There is a possible place however they don't do things like what I need. They educate you on how to make your home energy efficient and help you with calking leaks ect... not major repairs that I'm aware of. I can't do squat til I either get more hours consistantly at my job or a new job in fall or a second job in fall when my kids are all in school.

The grant I got was from the city, but there were various other levels of government funding available. Perhaps it'd be worth your while to do an online search of your local government sites.

Just cause hubby is getting some information doesn't mean you're committing to paying for new windows. Maybe he just wants an idea of cost. New windows might help cut down your heat bill in the winter too.. so look at the bright side. Maybe he's thinking of doing a couple at a time when the money is there. Why don't you discuss it with him and see what his ideas are and try to agree on some common ground.

Well his parents replaced all but their front window and paid 6k. So I know it's not going to be a cheap project. If you knew my hubby I worry it's like the car thing... Oh I just want to look to see what's on the lot... then I look in the drive way and wonder WTH were you thinking?!?! I wouldn't mind an estimate or four. But we won't be getting anything done sooner than later. We really need a new roof and gutters first... the rest is a need too but good looks only go so far.

So, your husband gave some random guy your personal information? He doesn't know that the guy is likely a scammer--just like those "pavers" who go around approaching homeowners.
When you are in the position to replace your windows, you approach a legitimate company to do it--not hire in some random guy who shows up on your doorstep.

Exactly, I was like if you have a brochure I'd be happy to look at it and take it into consideration when we are ready to make that change. I swear I felt like I was scolding my kids... you don't give someone our phone number or names. We have enough worries and now is not the time to get things done til we are in a better position with things. Yes they need to get done but if it puts you back into the red it wouldn't be a wise decision now would it?

Lol I am sorry to laugh but know it is with you not at you as I have a husband who has done the same to me on many occasions. Our fixer upper was mostly fixed when we where flooded and what I though would be done h=started all over again!
Men have a different way of looking at things and it is always apparent when it comes to the house!

He actually doesn't want to do even little things around the house because the kids won't keep things cared for and picked up. I totally get it but we can't just let things go til they are grown up KWIM? But if it's something that has to be done ASAP he's really good about it.
I think he also just wanted to yank the guy around he likes doing that to people as well.

I do think that there are times that sales people think that we are oblivious to the fact that there are repairs that need to be made in our homes. That said, I have to say that I think if you are able to come up with any way that you could replace your windows, that would be something that would be well worth your money. The reason that I say this is that we noticed a significant decrease in both our gas and our electric bills after we replaced the original windows on our house about five years ago.
