Are they not aware that office timings is from 9am to 6pm only...

A pleasant day Fellow Mylotters, I can't really understand why for some reason, other people do not care about the personal time of others. That even you are already at home, they will still disturb you and ask you to do some work. Isn't it that, they are not aware that the office hours was already finished. Do I need to post a print telling, our office hours is from 9am to 6pm. And since it is already 6pm, so, this is the reason why you are home. Hence, if you do work over an extended time, they would not even bother to give you an overtime pay nor an allowance. This is absurd!

maybe there is something so important which is the reason why they make you work even after office hours.but if its not that important you dont have to do it rightaway.

hi there johndur, i do understand your point. however, in this scenario, they should also respect the time of the staff. hence, it is not like an open store wherein you can buy anytime you want to.

My time is important to me so either they pay me to do extra work or I say I cannot do it... I know that is sometimes difficult because we don't want to lose our jobs but we are not free, there should be pay involved!

If this is only an occasional occurrence, I'd count myself lucky that the boss thinks enough of my work to request assistance, even though it was after hours. However, for frequent occurrences, I'd keep a detailed record and ask for comp time as compensation.

i am so thankful because here in my work i still never hear that or never been receive any messages and calls from my boss to do something, for me i think you should ignore it because you are already done to your work and aside from that after 6pm is not inclusive in your earning for that day.

You are not alone! It happens everywhere, working for long hours without overtime pay and sometimes the bosses feel like they're paying you every minute of every day, they forget you have a life to live outside the office. I always happens to me, working for long hours, and this company mobile that's supposedly for emergency purposes only for staffing posts on short notices, is like beeping during ungodly hours! Beats me really so I'm putting an end to this work scenario!

In my previous work we do have a 9am to 6pm work schedule. However we are not paid for overtime since we get good sales commissions. The downside is even though we're at home emails assigned to us which came from the clients should be replied to within 24 hours or 12 hours.

I suppose that you are talking about the people from your place of employment calling you when you are already home from work. I know that this is something that really does get on my husband's nerves. You see at the company where he works, he is the only one that knows how to troubleshoot the machines and he is also the one that does all of the machine set-ups. It does happen for him at least once a month that second shift will end up calling him to come back in and fix something after he'd already gotten home from work and was relaxing for the evening.

The best thing to do is turn off you phone when you're at home to avoid those instances. If you can, get two phones, one for work and one for personal. I understand you because that happens sometimes. I mean being a responsible employee finishing work on time entitles you to go home on time as well, that leaves no excuse for your workmates to bother you once you're out of the office.

That was also my concern from my previous online job. My contract stated that I am to work from 6am-3pm Philippine time, Mondays to Fridays. But what happened was, I would still be working until 10pm because I need to revise a presentation that will be used by my boss for his clients the following morning, or do a lot of alterations with the contract or export data from their old system to the new system, etc etc. I loved my work but I felt I was being abused already. They never offered an overtime pay. And after several months, i was not getting my salary on time. Until I have missed one whole month's salary and when I told them about that, they told me that they were having financial problems with their company, and that they can only pay me for one unpaid month, instead of 2. And that they still wanted me to work for them but for FREE! HELLO?!!!!

Hi aira! I worked in private companies before and yes there are instances that we really need to work beyond our regular working hours. That's part of being employed. Now that I am working in the government, I know that I should be serving the public 24/7 so even we are at home, we can be required to report for work in the exigency of service. So it would be up to me to create my own excuses. Broken phone, in other places (distance is a matter), etc. But in your case, I would suggest that you also find you own ways for your convenience. Shhh, leave you phone at the office. Have your personal phone that only your family knows. Have a nice day!

Yeah, you have a point and I agree with you. Employers must be sensitive enough about our personal time with our family. They must consider that we are only been paid by the allotted time in the contracts and that is working eight hours a day only. But regarding this issue, I can still manage to stay at work even if it is past eight hours already because I cared for the company. Sometimes only.

Definitely they should respect the office timings and should try to restrict the work within those hours only. If you are paying a employee that doesn't mean you own him for 24 hours and you can call him at any time you want. An employee have also a life to live and if you call him after the working hours to come up again then you are disturbing his private life.

Its the same everywhere i guess. Today i worked for 12 hours straight. No extra pay for that. Actually it was a lull period so not much work. But since i am a junior they don't like if i go home early..they ask questions as to why i go and all that.

this happened always with me, i used to work late night and even for 2-3 days regularly. i never got an extra pay. now when my company has shut their business, we all are out of job. no one has cared what we did here and never thought twice to fire us all. in job you will never get extra money or appreciation for extra work but yes by doing that extra work you will always be expected to do extra work. with my experience i can suggest you give our 100% in job but only in office hours.
