painting my kitchen

My kitchen needs a repainting quite badly. I'm torn as to what would be the best color to do it in. Right now it's baby blue, oak cabinets, countertop is called twighlight (blue, grey, black, and white) that needs replaceing, the floor is also patterned with blue. I would like to go darker or atleast on a portion of it. I really like the cranberry red color BUT I think that would be too much for such a small room plus I'd have to paint the hallway as the kitchen flows to the pantry, and past the bedrooms. Plus cranberry would look funny with blue flooring and counter top I'm sure. Though on some of the fabrics that have country prints especially Americana themed prints they are typically cranberry, beige, and blue. Or I'm thinking just do a darker blue. They also have peel and stick tile now so I could do that as the back splash. But that would lead into another issue about getting our electrical fixed since one of the outlets is a mess on that part of the wall.

3SnuggleBunnies Painting any room is a hard decision since it will usually stay that color for quite a while. I know some people who just paint one wall red and it loks good, but I an caucious with red in a kitchen. Red is one of my favorite colors..I wear it a lot. However, I heard red was a stimulant and my worry would be to overeat..[em]rofl [/em] I was skeptical with this theory until someone reminded me restaurants often use red in their decorating..carpeting, walls, etc...to stimulate peoples appetites

I have heard of the red wall theory. I have some friends who did just that, they would paint the wall in their kitchen that's exactly adjacent to the stove and sink and it sort of made the kitchen lively and it also went well with some cooking tools that have been blackened by the stove.

That's the problem with trying to change things up.. gotta match everything or it looks weird, and it's too expensive to replace everything. We're having that problem with the living room.. we want a gray/black theme, but our furniture is blue and brown.. so we need new furniture to match.

You could always go with these colors white brown or gray. Maybe even a darker blue would be nice. Or have you thought of wallpaper. You said you have fabric with country print so you could do country print wallpaper. Or you could do a solid print wallpaper in blue instead of paint.

I like your idea. The combination sounds neutral enough but still would be nice in a small room.

If you are keeping the blue in the kitchen I think you have either boring white, light brown or yellow they all go really nice with blue. I'm not into yellow but it works with blue. Back years ago we did our own remodeling of our kitchen. Design, color and actually installing the cabinets. We had all oak cabinets with blue speckled with black counter top. What we did for the backlash was put up floor tiles. The color of the tiles were the white with blue star in the middle which matched the blue on the counter. We even used it for one wall towards the entrance of the kitchen instead of painting. It was beautiful and I loved it. Just another option that maybe you didn't think of instead of painting the entire kitchen.

I think that of the colors that you have in the countertop that you have right now, I would choose to paint my kitchen a color of gray. One of the reasons that I would choose this is because of the fact that I really like gray as it doesn't show a lot of dirt. Another reason that I like that as a choice is because of the fact that it is kind of a neutral so it won't necessarily be something that you will have to change as you continue to update your kitchen. Right now ours is this ugly yellow, but we are going to be painting it soon to give it a more fresh look.

My husband and I are painting our house because it really needed a change. We are painting most of the rooms beige/tan and we will add colorful artwork and such. The color in the living room and kitchen was yellow before, we liked it but too much showed up on the walls after a little while... So, we decided to change the color. In the kitchen we are doing the tan on top, a chair rail will be separating the bottom and we are painting the bottom of the wall sage green. I know it will look SO pretty once were done. I stay away from dark colors because it definitely does make the room look smaller. The playroom is white which I hate because the kids play in there so you can see handprints and everything on the walls. So that will be the tan color as well and I have wall stickers to go on the walls in there to brighten it up more. =) I hope whatever you choose you love it! I hope it turns out lovely. =)

the colours of blue, cranberry and beige sound really nice and although i am not American, i love country colours and i think that green has been way over done. right now, my kitchen is a sunshine yellow which is ok but is also in bad need of painting but we are getting new kitchen cabinets pretty soon so it is pointless to paint it now. i am hoping to get a new backsplash too but i wonder how durable those peel and stick ones are. i love the look of the glass tiles but they are pretty expensive and don't go very well with the country motif and the antiques i have in my kitchen.

I love blue. We need to paint our living room - i would love to paint it a pale blue but I'm told it wont go with the laminate (wood colored) flooring. I think he just doesn't want it blue and hes lucky im not asking for pink! Dark colors make rooms look smaller.

I would say go grab a bunch of samples from the paint store--including ones in shades of which you are a bit unsure. Sometimes, things that you don't think that would work well within a space are the ones that actually turn out to work quite well.

Dark colors tend to make small rooms look even smaller. You might also want to consider that reddish colors are "hot" colors, so I'm not sure if I would want to use a hot color in the kitchen. Maybe use a light gray on the walls, with maybe a reddish back splash? Or a cranberry feature wall? Or maybe just red accessories? I think the gray walls would pull all the colors togenter.
