Galveston Island is great fun to visit on holiday. After arriving at Bush Intercontinental Airport on the North side of Houston, you drive south and take a ferry ride to the island. During the ferry ride, flocks of seagulls magically appear to take your offerings of bread bits, while pelicans preen for pictures on the piers. Once on the island, you are surrounded by opportunities for pleasure. On the Gulf Coast side, there are sandy beaches, water slides, roller skate, skateboard and surrey rentals, souvenir shops, hotels and seafood restaurants. The best seafood restaurant on this side of the island is award-winning Gaido's. Gaido's has been serving sensational seafood to generations of patrons, including celebrities, for many decades. Stroll around the side streets for shopping and reggae rhythms. Head over to the Strand District for tours of architecturally significant historic homes, each with its own fascinating tales, and a wedding chapel with a white iron lace fairy tale pumpkin carriage. Drive to the other side and park at the Fisherman's Wharf just before dinner to catch a window table at the best show in town: the seabirds taking flight against a backdrop of the fleet's masts and nets at sunset. Fisherman's Wharf will get your romantic evening started on the right note with picture perfect sunset scenery, gourmet meal, live music, drinks and validated parking for the evening for a great price. Afterwards, you can bar hop in the area until you're ready to turn in. Galveston is a wonderful place to experience many world cultures with a laidback island vibe as the constant thread throughout.

Wasn't there an old Country and Western song entitled Galveston? I love hearing about places I have never visited, you can almost close your eyes and envisage yourself there from your in-depth description. Funny in my younger days, teens and twenties I loved travelling, although I have never ventured outside Europe, the world is a big place so many places to see and so little time. Thank you for your discussion on Galveston, Texas my friend an enjoyable read and it sounds like a great place and yet unheard of.

Hello, old friend! I think the song Galveston was covered by a male country western vocalist, but I cannot recall his name. Oddly, I have yet to read a travel story in newspapers, magazines or books about Galveston. I prefer to simply go there or remember past trips. Galveston has a special place in my heart, with memories of great friends and good times. Moonlit walks on the beaches at Galveston are very nice, whether solo or with a companion.

Hey red! Galveston is very beautiful. I had forgotten to mention Moody Gardens. It's a one stop natural history museum, gardens, rotating viewing and interactive exhibits and IMAX theatre with snack bar, restaurant, parking, hotel and boat excursions. When I went to see a tree frog exhibit, I also saw stunning pink flamingos up close. Their massive pyramidal glass greenhouse with tropical Rainforest gardens, birds and butterflies takes the cake every time!

I very much like the sound of Galveston in Texas. Taking the ferry ride to the island must be lots of fun. I love sandy beaches, seeing pelicans and watching sunsets. I am keen on seeing different cultures and spending time in a laid back destination. The Gulf Coast side sounds like an appealing destination to me. Happy traveling.

Heya maxi! Outside of August thru October (peak hurricane season), Galveston, Texas is a grand vacation destination for all ages and tastes. My favorite store in Galveston plays Jamaican music, throws the doors and shutters open to catch the breezes off the Gulf and offers lightweight clothing and accessories for a carefree tropical holiday. Now I need to play some reggae, so I'll feel like I'm at that store in Galveston, Texas. lol

Would like to also mention the hurricanes. Galveston has been hit hard by nature but the people always bounce back! Have a friend who owns short-term rental properties there so if anybody is going on vacation and wants a nice place to stay, can put you in touch with him. I don't get paid for referrals. He's just a really nice guy and knows what he's doing with his investment properties. Also ... love the Glen Campbell song. "Galveston Oh Galveston".
This song was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's hits By the Time I Get to Phoenix and Wichita Lineman. Webb also wrote MacArthur Pa...
