Does Anyone Ever Actually HAVE "Any Reason These 2 Should NOT Be Wed"?

You know when--in traditional weddings--the priest 'asks' the congregation, "Does anyone have any reason these two should not be wed? Speak now or forever hold your peace." Does anyone ever stand up and declare such a reason? And what is the priest supposed to do, call the whole thing off? put it up to a vote? I think the only reason anyone would 'speak now' is so that they don't have to 'forever hold their peace'! So that they can TELL everybody, "See, I told you so!" That may be a way to avoid divorce---encourage them to hold that marriage in defiance of he/she/they who say it won't work. The etymology of the word "wedding" really is 'bet' or 'wager'! That's why weddings are supposed to be huge public events---because (the idea behind is, anyway) the more people you have 'backing your wager,' the surer you must be that the marriage will last! (Making the most-famous Hollywood-weddings an abomination---huge parties for massive LOSERS!) Do those weddings include the 'Speak now or forever hold your peace'? Because somebody SHOULD speak-up! (It would probably get them kicked out before the reception, which is what EVERYONE is REALLY there for; but at least they wouldn't bet on a loser!) Or what do you think would happen if somebody did that!

I think I've only seen objections in movies. I've never encountered anyone who opposed. Maybe they just made it so people can make dramatic movies our if it. Lol God i do not know but you have a point. you seem to always include etymologies a lot.

Why just give you the tippy-top when it's much-more-satisfying to give you the full depth down to the root?

It's easier to give you what you want when you're on top, because then you're in control ... you can take the top, you can take the whole thing down to the root, and the one beneath you can only be happy that you are happier-&-happier You're The Boss!

But the top is good too. Being on top is good too. And the best ones are always on top. Meh, I'm just messing, i get what you mean.

I was at a wedding where it was stopped because of an objection to the marriage...It was the opposite of a shotgun wedding...The fathers of both the kids arrived with shotguns and BOTH opposed the wedding... The wedding did not happen then or ever... I do not go to weddings anymore...

Me neither ... well, I do; but only for the reception-food.

Maybe ... or maybe leaving out the gift can be your silent way of saying that--though you hope the two will do well--you DON'T 'bet' they'll stay married

I am the person. I would object to y own wedding! The only reason I would be at my own wedding is because i was being forced. so when the Rabbi said does anyone have any reason... it would be I saying I do. I never wanted to marry. . I think I can understand the reason for the support of the marriage. Staying together if you are married is hard. The only time I have seen some object was on my soaps. And it is usually because the couple was keeping a secret. Either the groom is about to have a baby with someone else or the last time I saw it happen, the bride was pregnant with another man's baby.

The last time I saw it happen was in WEDDING CRASHERS (with Vince Vaughn & ... is that Owen Wilson or his brother whose name I forget?). Actually, movies are the only place I've ever seen that happen. & why would you go all the way up to the altar? You would be a beautiful Runaway Bride (And why haven't they made the movie Runaway Groom yet? It would also be a good sequel to Escape from New York or whatever one of those Kurt Russell Escape-movies was latest!)

The mother on "Everybody Loves Raymond" protested at his brother's wedding. Can't remember his name.

This is the main reason why there's actually a posting in the Catholic Churches in my country a few months prior the wedding. To be sure that nobody opposes the union. I have never attended a wedding where someone did oppose - ever! I did think something like this would happen at one of the weddings I went to (the guy was Japanese and the girl was Filipina. The girl's aunts were not really in favor of her marrying the Japanese.) I honestly thought the aunts would barge in and stop the wedding instead they just boycotted and didn't attend. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

That's the way to bet against it---just don't show up! But if you're invited ... well, there'll be cake! Bet on the cake

I don't know of any incident were anyone spoke up when the minister said, "If anyone can give just cause why these two...," but my mother told me about a wedding she attended where the bride said, "No," when the minister asked her, "Do you take this man..." She decided at the last moment she didn't want to be married to him. I don't know what happened after that. My mother never said.

A real Runaway Bride?... or almost-as-good

I have never been to a wedding where someone stopped the ceremony. I think it would be a shocking moment. That only happens in the movies, I hope.

Personally could you imagine, if you seen on National TV a Celebrity trying to get Married, and then someone standing up and saying why they should not marry. It would make for an interesting scene, and make you wonder sometimes, what that person might also be up too. Yes, it is a shame that more marriages especially Hollywood or have to end in divorce. Makes you wonder why marriage vows are not so sacred anymore.

I almost witnessed one wedding where somebody did stand up to oppose the union. Me and my friends were invited to an old schoolmate's wedding and we decided to come because a close friend of ours is a bridesmaid. I wasn't able to go unfortunately because I got food poisoning and can't be far from the toilet. So anyway, on that part a woman stood up and said that she and the groom got married when they were still on college back when they were still 19. Of course that is enough to cause a commotion and some people questioned the validity of the marriage it being done in secret and they are below 25 years old without parental consent. The issue wasn't settled immediately so they didn't proceed with the wedding. Last I heard they got back together but they haven't gotten around to getting married. Yet. Or I don't know if they still plan to do it at all.

There have been plenty of stories where one or the other left their partner at door and never made it to the altar.

I'm sure in their mind, someone always does, but rarely anyone will ever say anything! In Hollywood weddings, I totally agree with you. How many times have they gotten divorced the next week just for the press coverage? It's all a ploy for attention. People should really object to those weddings, thats for sure!
