How do you name your pets?

A couple of days ago I posted a photo of one of my newborn goat kids. One of my friends here suggested he should be called Macintosh. Well as he was nameless still, why not? Macintosh it is. The second little kid, the one I helped deliver, is still nameless. I don't normally put a lot of effort into naming the goats, but it takes me ages to think of something suitable for the household pets. How do you decide what names to give your pets? Amongst others, I have cats named after characters in a children's story, cats and dogs with names in different languages, a cat named after a fish, a dog named for the colour of his puppy fur, and a dog who ended up with the ridiculous name of Killer after I allowed my kids to name him. How about you?

I don't have any pets right now. We did have a fish a few years back which was given by a neighbor. It was aptly called the neighbor's name. But this 'lucky' 2nd goat-kid you have should be called Lucky.

I guess I'm pretty good in that area, it doesn't take much thought and I just go with whatever strikes me. I named my 2 black cats Twilight and Eclipse.. that was the only thing that took a little thought.

My ex had four cats, I realized now why they let me name them, because they used the cats as bargaining chips, as emotional blackmail. Sorry to digress, At the time I was into mythology, and named the first two cats, brother and sister Zeus and Hera, the third cat my ex named as Edward, because they worked at Edward House, and the fourth, I named Octavia, because she was born in October and I just liked the name, it was unusual and it seemed perfect for her.

Octavia is a very regal name. I like it.

We are no good at naming pets! haha now that i remember it makes me wonder and think how does others name their pets and the names are cute and so unique. Here are samples of our pets and their names and origins: Santa - the dog was a female pup by our dog that gave birth during christmas, she was born with a golden fur. We just thought to name her santa because she's born on christmas eve. Boxer - oh this dog was a pug that we got.. he is so cute.. we named him boxer because one time, we saw him carrying my brother's boxer shorts in his mouth!! Molly - we named a dog molly, actually it should be mali (short for malikot, a tagalog term for always moving, someone that does not seem to get tired, walking about and all... because she is like that!) so we just improved the name a bit and turned out to be molly. :D And then we have Peggy - because she is a female pug! haha yeah we can't think of anything else. grrrr ( i miss her =(... he he i think i would not want a killer as a name though. he he :D others really just name them for their characteristics. :D

Molly is a nice name for a dog. Mali is good too, it suits most dogs I know!

I've had numerous pets over the years. Some I acquired as babies and some have been rescue critters. With the rescues, I kept the name they already had as they were accustomed to that. With the newborns, I waited for a time to see what kind of personality was developing and named them accordingly. One cat I named Crumb-bum as he was always following me into the kitchen when he realized that's where the food was. Another cat I called Blue; she was a greyish-blue color and always looked sad. And so on.....

I only renamed one of my rescue cats, and that's because she was originally called Baby which I thought was an awful name for a cat. I renamed her Ellie, which at least sounded similar.

That can take a while. Normally something seems to start getting used, and then it sticks.

Well, back when I was growing up, we were always allowed to name our Cats, as we raised them. Mine when I was a teenager was adorable. She was a gray cat, and when she had kittens she always loved to show them off. Even right after she had them. She would carry them around like a proud mama, and set them at your feet like LOOK. My brother named his Striped Sox just because he liked to suck on socks. The dog we have now we bought off someone who rescues dogs. He is a pomeranian with papers. His name is Reggie, and it really fits. Actually his papers say Sir Reginald. He is 8 1/2.

I named one cat Squirrel, because she liked to look out at the squirrels, and having some Siamese in her, was a bit squirrelly. My erstwhile hubby gave Mona her name, in honor of a character in a book, but I forget which one. Alfie was short for Alfalfa J. Sprouts. That's what he told me his name was. Harmony was named by her previous slave, but she doesn't mind the name so I still call her that, when I'm not calling her Sweetie or pussycat or lasagne or whatever... Tiger, of course, was a brown tabby, and Charlie had a little black moustache just like Mr. Chaplin's. Their brother Percy, just had this look that said "My name is Percival."

My mom took literary and mythological names. I just pick whatever the mood strikes me. But lately the children have gotten to give the names. The black and white cat is Oreo, the manx is Jason (after a school mate of my son's) and the tortie is KitKat (name the rescue gave her).

At first I observe their personality. An of course their color of their fur and if they have spots like several of my pups. One is called taco haha he looks like the star dog for the old Taco Bell commercials haha. Another canelo (Spanish for cinnamon) he was brownish. The rest have common names but one has a very funny name. Mr. Lee haha he is black and white but he looks like an old dog he so hairy haha.

Somehow or another, whether its their registered name or a nickname of theirs, they usually end up being named after legendary Montreal Canadiens.

Our first cat name was based on the leading heroine that we watched before which is Maningning... but later we found out that our cat is a boy so we change it to Munelito with a nickname of Muningning... lol! The second cat was named by my dad as JR which mean Muningning's Junior... hehehe he is the son of Muningning.... The third and fourth was named by me again.. and I named them according to their colors... blacky and Orange.... but Orange look more like the cat called Dewey (the cat who was adopted by a librarian)... so sometimes I called him Dewey Decimal... That's how we named our cats!

My parents let me name both dogs that we currently have. One is Harley and the other is Nelly. I named Harley when I was about 8 years old and I think I found the name after just looking at a list of pet names. We got Nelly when I was about 14 or 15 and I just happened to think of the name while we were driving home with her. I'm currently in the process of getting a kitten and I've been thinking of the name Oliver for him. But sometimes, I change my mind once I meet the new pet and I come up with a name that I feel fits more. Sometimes it takes me longer to come up with a name for a pet. Before I got my first horse I had to think of a name for him and I ended up going with Beylee (pronounced Bailey) and I made the spelling different because his dad's name had the word Bey in it. The next horse I got it was a bit easier to think of his name because his registered show name is Sensation Al Beau, so we call him Beau for short.

When I was little, I have two dogs named Whistle and her husband Magic. When our cats gave birth to three kittens, I named them ending with y. Fluffy, Chichie and Whitey. Back then, I just love the iiee sound.
