A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to my son on facetime and he was complaining how he hates the sony vaio that i left him. He said it as broken (hubby and me thinks it needed reformatting). So I told him not to complain anymore because I'm just gonna get him a new laptop! To my surprise, he told me to send my macbook pro to him as soon as possible! I said, I couldn't do that because of my online classes. Then he told me to get him his own macbook pro! Kids! And he's only 8 years old! I don't remember asking my parents for anything this expensive when I was 8. This is what technology does to a child. Gone were the days where you can see them on the streets playing with each other. Now they play with friends online.

At 8 years old he probably doesn't truly know the difference between $10 and $100.

@shaggin Sony Viao was sony's high end laptops back then. Actually my son knew the value of money from the time he started to read. Even when we go buy his toys he would check first how much it is and when it's expensive, he's he one who would say not to buy it as it isn't worth it. He's just really into apple. He had his first iPad when he was 6 years old. Now that he's 12 he has his own computer, his iPad and and an iPhone 7.

That is the age. My son is now 12 and he wanted a computer for xmas. My evil ex was too cheap to buy him a computer. Now remember, she owns three houses and has close to if not a million dollars in the bank. Her excuse for not getting him one was, "I cannot afford it." can you imagine that? What a cheap Fu@k. Anyway, I saved my money and I bought him an iMac for xmas. I feel he deserved it and sine his mother is a poor millionaire, I figured he should have it. I live on a fixed income unlike the evil b!tch. And I know that with a computer like that, he will have it for many years. So I think of it as an investment.

Kids nowadays are so much into this type of gadgets. That's because they see the versatility of it. However, it is up to the parents to decide whether to give them one. They have to weigh if it is indeed needed by the child. Now, maybe since you have the money, why not buy him a new macbook pro, Toni.

Hahaha! I was considering giving him mine since it's not a year old yet. It's the latest of the mid 2012 model. I'm thinking of getting a macbook air for myself since i'm travelling and it would be more convenient for me.

Well, technology advances and as a result, times change with the uses and costumes! Yes, you're right. You and me are more or less contemporary beliefs about our age (I, in May I make 38 years). When we were teenagers, we used to play outside with friends, maybe to public parks. Today with the advent of the Internet, and computer smartfone, the kids do not actually see more play in the street or in a safe and green. All at home in front of a screen and play online! They are better nowadays, or ours times? I frankly prefer to stay at home. Outside, nowadays, you can do unpleasant encounters!

My son still plays outdoors, longboard and swimming. I think it's still better for them to play outside. As long as they don't go somewhere dangerous or under adult supervision. My city is a safe place so i don't really worry about my son being in danger when playing outside.

I know exactly what you mean. It was my nephews birthday last week, and instead of the usual board game, sneakers etc.. all he wanted was a xbox headset so he could play with his friend. WHO LIVES ACROSS THE STREET! how insane are kids these days? get some fresh air!! haha!

He's one lucky kid, and I hope he knows that. I haven't even gotten a sony vaio until I was 25 and with a good paying job! And I only gotten a macbook air just recently when I think the sony vaio can no longer keep up with my personal and work needs.

Yeah i think he appreciates that he is well loved by everybody in the family. When he was 6 he got his own iPad, that's when i didn't even have one. When I left the country i gave him my ipad and now he's got two, plus the vaio. He even has a blackberry! But he's a good kid. He's into sports. He likes swimming and longboarding. In fact he joined the downhill longboard competition last January!

In my point of view, your son's request for the macbook pro is understandable. He knows how a good laptop should performs. Only a high end light weighted laptop like mac book pro offers amazing visual and audio experiences, and also powerful processing capability. But all these wonderful features comes at a price. Mac book pro is still regarded as luxurious items even for a average working adult like me. As a eight year old kid, your son is yet to understand how we had struggled to make a living and battled with uncertainties in life. In other words, kids seldom view things from economical stand points. They will never bother how we should spend our hard earned money wisely. Therefore, it's actually a good opportunity for us to educate them about simple financial planning. They will definitely benefit from it when they grow up. Through the process, they will learn the importance of saving, to be reasonably thrifty and spend their money wisely. Besides, bringing kids to experience the outdoor activities is beneficial to them as well. Exposures to the mother nature can promote physical exercise and health. I am glad that your son is having some outdoor activities such as swimming. I will be worried if I see kids indulge themselves all day long with computers and games. This is very common nowadays as the result of technology advances in our modern society. Finally I hope you and your family is dong great. Have a nice day!

Time has really changed. When I was a kid, I walked 4 km to get to school. Now my kids want me to drive them to school. Indeed technology has changed almost everything.

Exactly! I remember asking my mom to buy me a Nintendo Game and Watch. And I only had it as a Christmas gift! We grew up receiving gifts on birthdays and during Christmas only. But kids now, they demand from parents to buy them toys.

I see.... but when my son is on the same situation as your son, I would give him something but nut that expensive. I don't want him to be used to receiving expensive things all the time.

Yes, you're right. Childs play with each other online. Times have changed and the web and mobiles have become powerful tools. You can see everywhere people who is talking or chatting with their mobiles. And this trend is increasing day by day. I think also that more people is being educated online, because students can better manage their time and it is possible that education online is going to be cheaper, but I'm not sure. I myself spend most of the time in front of a desktop, because of the job and by learning. Who knows how far will go technologie yet at the future. Have a nice day.

Before i came to work in a school, I was teaching online the whole day until about 11pm at night. I was like a hermit. I never went out of the house except on weekends. I did that for two years and realized i'm missing out a lot of the outside world lol.

Yeah, I think when my kids were that age the most expensive thing we bought them were Play Stations consoles. They only started to have their own laptop at high school. And we did not even have to buy them because they got them from school.
