Planning to set up an aerial antenna

Our house is located very near, if not within the business area of our city and I find it to be a very efficient location because most things I need and want to buy and acquire are easily accessible from my place but I just find it horribly surprising that many TV channels are unclear. I then realized that it's because most of the base stations of these channels are located far away so now I have finally decided to set up an antenna this week. We don't have cable connection because we barely watch TV anyway, but when I do I want it to be clear. For several days now, I have been contemplating whether to proceed with this plan or not, and finally last night I made a decision to go with it. I hope that by the week end the antenna will be installed properly and see if it was really worth all the trouble, since I will be doing the installation myself. Anyway, any tips on this? Have you ever had signal problems? Has there ever been a time that having an external antenna caused some problems?

Are you going to use a rotor? A rotor installs under the antenna and can be used to adjust the direction of the antenna to aim it at different broadcast towers and thereby sharpen the signal. I believe modern rotors also now can be turned wirelessly. Also, make certain you ground the antenna well or it can be struck by lightning and set your house on fire.

You have stated good points here. The antenna I am about to buy and install is the cheap kind so I guess the rotor is out of the question. I just have to study about making a good ground for it as it might not come with that as well since I am very careful especially when it comes to something that could cause fire problem. Thanks for your help.

yes try to install a good quality antenna if you want a better signal. it is good also you need a long wire or cable to extend it and put it in your roof. hopefully you got a better signal =)

The only experience I have with antennas is with the rabbit ear or set top type. I have had pretty good luck with them. I changed from using one in my living room to having cable several years ago because I had cable for the Internet and they came out with a plan that if you also got the basic TV cable, it was actually cheaper for both than the Internet alone was going to be. I still have the rabbit ears for a small set in the bedroom. All the channels here, in my city in the U.S., went to digital a couple of years or so ago which caused some problems since I live very close to the mountain top where most of the broadcast antennas are and how the rabbit ear antenna is turned became critical. It has to be just right to get one station while there is more room for error with the others.

That's usually the case here, the set top antenna should be placed at a specific position or angle for a specific channel to be clear or at least watchable. We used to have cable connection but I find it not so useful now. Perhaps in the future when I have a better TV, I'll switch to digital cable with HD or something like that.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i can understand your situation very well and i think u must go forward and install an antenna that would help u watch TV at home. i think there are network problems in every house and we too face such issues at times but thankfully most of the issues are sorted out in quick time that helps us stay connected with our daily shows without any interruptions. What say?

Let somebody who is an expert do the job. Aerial antenna is good but why not try ground antenna it serve the purpose too.

I try to do things myself but I'm open to asking for help from experts when I see needed. Thanks for the tip. By the way, what's a ground antenna?
