Botanical Gardens

Botanical gardens are one of the places that I look for in any city that I visit. My hometown doesn't have one yet. I have seen botanical gardens in Galveston, Houston, Dallas and Austin, TX, Chicago, IL and Busch Gardens in Florida. At the one in Dallas, I once attended a Sunday Pops concert put on by the local symphony, with the new African Pavilion visible through the floor to ceiling plate glass windows behind them. When in Chicago, I visited their botanical garden to see an exhibit by the world famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. He had done blown glass sculptures that looked like the different plants in the garden. So my friends and I walked through the botanical garden, trying to tell the difference between the glass sculptures and the botanical species they were tucked in beside. It was very impressive. The botanical garden in Galveston is called Moody Gardens' Rainforest. They have all kinds of lush tropical greenery and flowers, along with butterflies that light on your head, shoulders, arms and hands. Botanical gardens are fun, yet relaxing places to visit in cities that have them.

You are indeed a lover of botanical gardens. :) I am not a big fan but it calms my spirit whenever I am inside the garden. We have a lot here in the Philippines. One of which is my favorite, "National Botanical Garden". It is few hours away from Manila and situated in a beautiful valley. It is cold because it is elevated (300 meters I guess). There plenty of ferns, rare orchids and plants. I also had a chance to visit Singapore's Botanic Garden when I was working in that country. The rubber tree orchard is really amazing because you will be walking inside the rubber tree arc. It also has huge number of flora and fauna. rainforest and a lot of eye catching colorful flowers and orchids. It is the best place to relax. I was able to visit the garden in Malaysia (since it's just an hour away from Singapore), the Perdena Botanical Garden in the main city, Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the back of the famous Petronas Twin Towers. I went there with my mother as she is a big fan of gardens too. It's a garden/park where you can also see a man made lake in the middle. There are ferns, plumeria, forest trees, waterfalls, orchids and the like. It really calms my spirit :) Hoping to visit few more botanical gardens in neighboring Asian countries. :)

Nice to meet you, paperdolls, and thanks for your generous response to this discussion on Botanical Gardens. It sounds like you've had a nice time visiting botanical gardens in your corner of the world. It would be nice to someday visit some of the botanical gardens you've seen. I have a dream of doing a botanical garden of my own someday, for people to visit and enjoy working in.

I love to visit botanical gardens in different places in the world. In my home country I have been to Kew Gardens in the west part of London. It has ornate looking green houses one with tropical looking plants. I visited the Sydney Botanical Gardens in my favorite city in Australia. I went to Cape Town's botanical gardens too. Wow! I loved visiting a botanical Garden on Vancouver Island in Canada. Last year I walked around a botanical garden in Brazil. My daughter met some friendly children there to play with for a while. I find botanical gardens relaxing and enjoyable to visit. Last summer I visited some of the gardens of Cornwall beginning with the Eden Project. I adore palm like plants and others that look tropical. Every summer I go on Sunday visits to people's gardens open to the public. I especially like the hardy exotic type gardens that look tropical.

Heya maxi. Sounds like you've had a lot of fun at botanioal gardens around the world. Another botanical garden I've visited that I forgot to mention earlier is Hodges Gardens in Leesville, Louisiana, USA. They are an all exterior botanical garden, formerly the home of a wealthy family that donated it to the state, I believe. Hodges Gardens is known for their Christmas displays, including light shows and trees decorated by local schoolchildren, and Easter sunrise services, featuring local choirs, with audience members on quilts on the grass, beside the lake. The Easter sunrise service is usually freezing cold, but totally worth going for the musical, floral and sunrise beauty. The quilts guests brings are pretty nice, too, usually handmade family heirlooms handed down for generations. That's a show in itself.

I forgot about Kew Gardens, that's the nearest one to me I guess, in the South West of London. I have never been to that one, only Ventnor Botanical Gardens on the Isle of Wight.

maxi and wolfie, you two have definitely seen some lovely botanical gardens in your lifetimes. I hope one day to save enough to see these botanical gardens for myself.

There is a big botanical gardens on one of the islands off the south coast of UK. Not sure if you have heard of the Isle of Wight. Ventnor Botanical Gardens it's a wonderful place to go, trouble is you need more than a couple of hours to really appreciate all that it has to offer. Sadly there are all too few of these places, and none within reach of where I live.

I have indeed heard of the Isle of Wight, wolfie. British Studies were a hobby of mine growing up, and still are to some extent. Thanks for filling in a gap in my botanical garden education with your mention of the Ventnor Botanical Gardens. I'm the type that could easily spend two hours in a botanical garden like that. They might even have to show me the door at closing time.
