How do I can a Canadian tax id for reporting royalties?

Question for Canadian authors. I have an American publisher and they have asked for a tax id number so that my royalties can get reported. I'm fine with that but I don't know how to go about getting said number. Anyone who can help out on that count would have my gratitude. I'll find out the answers eventually on my own. I just think I might save some time and effort by asking people who are that far along in their writing careers.

Each publisher is different, I got one tonight that was asking for the W8 Ben form because I made 5.00. I told them they were crazy and they could keep the 5.00. I never used that site.

I have gotten word back from my publisher. Apparently as a Canadian I don't need it. I was sent the generic list of things that they needed. I will have to track everything myself for taxes. I used to do tax returns professionally though and there was a way to report it without too much trouble. I can pay taxes in installment if my books start selling and making enough money for that to become an issue.

I have no idea why you would need a Canadian tax id for reporting royalties. I did find these http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/startup/f/businessnumber.htm but could not find anything in regard to royalties. I also have a book in the works, and it is a fiction book, and I am not that far, that is not having published anything except for an article or to. It is no wonder I am nervous about publishing if this is what I have to go through.

Thanks for the effort to find something. I'll figure it out soon enough. Unless my sales are really impressive there is no problem in Canada with not having one. Home businesses don't have to register for that kind of stuff until they are making a certain amount of money. Hopefully there are more people on MyLot here with useful information on the subject. I think it would be valuable for anyone writing professionally.

Incidentally my question should have read get instead of can. I have a lot of distractions around me right now.
