In Florida a 36 year old man is in bed sleeping when a sinkhole swallows him up bed and all. His brother tried to save him but he to almost got taken away, but was saved by the county sheriff. The TV and dresser were no where to be found. The only thing sticking out of the hole was the corner of the mattress. The hole is about 20 feet deep by 20 feet wide. I can't believe what this man experienced and thought for that second if he even had the time to think. It has to be one of the worse ways to die because you are being smothered by dirt. What are your thoughts on this and what do you think is the worse way to die?

I understand from the news that sinkholes are phenomenal in Florida, America which brings me to ask how authorities are allowing occupancy on these potentially dangerous piece of land.
Not knowing whether the victim is still alive or not, but it seems like the experts on the ground are concluding this and calling off rescue efforts.
What kind of experts? Could this have been avoided?
Seeing that there are houses near the vicinity of the fatal site, I have to say that some people are not doing their jobs here.

The family and families sure do not have a clue but I wouldn't say the same for those involved with the land development starting with the authorities, civil engineering experts, land surveyors and developers.
I refuse to believe than none of them do not know and could have known better than to develop that dangerous piece of land to let such a fatal phenomenon fall on ill-knowledge innocents like Mr. Bush here.

I'm sure the family didn't have a clue that they were living where a sinkhole could happen. I'm sure if people knew this they wouldn't live there or buy there. It is just something that happens but I have never heard of such a tragic ending as this from a sinkhole happening.

It was one of the worst stories I've ever heard and saddest. I saw this on tv yesterday and saw his brother who was in the house with him and he was just sobbing. From what I understand, the man was yelling and his brother jumped into the hole to try and save him but he couldn't...but he did hear him yelling for help.
The rescuers helped the one brother out of the sinkhole but are at a standstill right now because they don't know how big this hole will get and they're nervous about putting any heavy equipment in that area. All the homes in the area were evacuated too.
I also saw on the news that Florida has had many sinkholes in the past, which is a scary thought along with other states in that vicinity. It makes me shudder to think.

I know when you hear there have been many more sinkholes in Florida it is quite scary. Now I have another thing to be worried about with my parents living in F
lorida bascially all alone.1 person likes this

I would be worried too if my parents lived there, but I guess it doesn't really matter where you live, something can go wrong. We hear about California eventually falling into the ocean, earthquakes in different area's, hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms. Look at all that flooding that just happened on the east coast a few months ago. See, we can't outrun anything.
I guess if it's going to happen, it's going to happen and there's nothing much we can do about it.

Wow, and to have your brother see the whole thing as it is happening and almost risk his own life to try and save you. What an experience this must have been, and truly one I would not want to have to know of someone who this happened too. I am sure this will traumatize his brother for life. But what a thing to happen to someone especially with no warning.

To tell you frankly, I had a nightmare when I saw this news on TV. Supposedly our home is considered the safest place to be in that is why we tend to sleep soundly and peacefully. I certainly don't want that kind of experience ever. What if there was no rescue? It looks too horrible being buried alive. I can't imagine what this man felt when he was swallowed by the ground together with his mattress and all the rest.

I don't think he really had time to think. I think it was all over for him quickly. I just can't imagine it myself, it would be like having a nightmare. I just feel so bad for the brother and his family. Especially his brother hearing him screaming for him. He will not be able to ever forget his brother's screams. That will stay with him forever and I wonder then how you live with that.

No he was not saved. His brother try to save him but couldn't. The brother while trying to save his brother ended up getting help from the county sheriff. If he hadn't made it there in time both brothers would have been killed by the sinkhole.
