What do you think is the number one reason for an employee to leave a company?
I've read a few articles on this and in most cases, 'the boss' makes number one reason. But maturing in the industry, I guess this only becomes the trigger point and not the main factor. Or maybe we just need to mature? What do you think?

In my experience, the boss is the reason. I don't have problems with my other office mates, salary, VL, SL and my office. But the way he treated me stressed me out. Always yelling, throwing things, saying bad words. I can't even remember the time he laughed or even smiled. His tone is always high, giving orders like I am a soldier or a thing that he owns. Calls me on my day off at 5 am. Ugh. I stayed for 9 years because of the high compensation but I eventually resigned.

I love my job there. My only problem is the boss. I was so stressed with my previous job that I decided to put up a business of my own. Be my own boss.
I may not be earning as much like before but at least I'm happy and no one's yelling at me anymore.

Wow! Nine years! I'm sure you've grown out from different trials from that company! And I'm also sure you've grown maturely out of it that any difficulties on the next company would be less than what you've tolerated in the past, could I be right? :)
Very encouraging comment, greenthumb018!

I think there are many reasons, but yes, there could be one that tops them all. As you have said it is the boss that is probably the main reason that people leave their companies. Well, I think, it is just the top 2 reason. haha
First to me is really that people move because they are no longer happy with the money they are getting from their company. You see, the people are often have this connotation that success in career meant that you are getting a huge amount of money in your pay check. Admit it or not, people will not move to another company if they will get less salary than what they are getting now, right?
Second, Boss is mean, Boss is not really good, and not reasonable - yes this is it probably but I'd say more or less all the relationships we have at work is a big factor. having no friends at all, having people around you day in and day out that makes you feel out of place, your do not belong, or makes your life miserable.. you will probably just get out of the job and find a company with better people in them that you can work well with.
Third, is probably the load of work. While many people would find this not a reason, but when one is sto stressed out and no help is coming and all that comes is the additional task that gets heavier to carry, one would eventually tap out and just think to leave - especially if the tasks or work done does not have a corresponding additional dough. =P
Fourth, would be career change/ shift. Of course when one wants to change or shift to another career, they would have to sacrifice their current work, no matter how much they are getting, and sacrifice the company and the workplace if the working relationship is harmonious, for the change in career. People want to live their dream and yes, they would be willing to give up what they have to live their dream no matter if they have to start again. =)

As one would say, "We must work to live and not live to work"
Thank you for your inputs! :)

Hmm.....well tat hold true when I left my brother in law's pharmacy after working for 10 years. I just felt I was doing a lot of work without him giving credit but when things are bad, it was always my fault. I was the one who started with that business since he was still in Med School that time. I loved that business but i just had enough of it. I opted to stay at home and take care of my kids instead. Imagine me not having a day off. Even if I was sick, still I was supposed to report for work.

Have you thought of starting your own? Eventually, maybe. :)
But to tell you honestly, your domestic responsibilities now is much much more rewarding than to work for a company. Your children will someday be extra grateful that you stayed home with them! :)
Thanks for the comment, jenny1015!

The number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they feel unappreciated. Other reasons include: No advancement opportunities, the position isn't in line with their goals (they are not happy with what they are doing). The majority of bosses overlook quality team members and praise to little while criticizing far to often. You attract more flies with honey than what you do with lemons. I read a book a few years ago (about six-and forgive me because I can't recall the name of the book, but I found it in the marketing section of Borders when it was still in business) and their was this boss who had hugged every single one of his employees, he praised them often and his company was extremely successful with very little turnover. That right there tells the story.
I agree with you though, we all need to be a little more mature, leave "home" problems at home and "work" problems at work. It's a hard sell, but when we can find that balance we will all do so much better.

Yes. Though it is also amazing how other people could tolerate their bosses. I know one who stayed in a company for about 10 years now, to a boss who throws a stapler when not in the mood.
Thanks for the comment @mariaperalta

As far as reasons for an employee to leave a company is concerned, it could be one or many.Plus it could be one of the main reasons or simply customized to his situation. There is no single rule for things. At least thats what i am seeing as an employee in the IT industry. It industry is known for its hugh attrition and there are different reasons for same. But then i agree most of the times, it is because of one's manager. It is tough to keep an employee happy for long. You need to appreciate the work in different forms of monetary and promotion benefits. You need to make sure you do not burn him out or pressurize him beyond a limit and make things worse for him.It is more than an art and more of a science and its people management as well.If things go well,it works and if not he leaves. It is as simple as that.I am currently working for my third organisation. The reason i left my first was due to non-recognition of things by my manager and second time it was monetary and benefits.I do not think its about maturity .But rather it is about meeting our ambitions and aspirations. These things could change from time to time as well as person to person. Thanks!

Thank you for balancing the responses! True, though, that it's about meeting our ambitions and aspirations. One could achieve it at a younger age and one may grow old to really realize what they really wanted.
Thanks!
