Overly persistent salespeople

I'm a pretty reasonable person and always try to be happy and give respect. Nothing really gets me upset too often but I think one time My husband and I went to a Sears store to look around. I decided to purchase a few shirts that were on sale. When we got up to the cashier to pay, the salesperson asked us if we wanted to open a line of credit, and I politely declined. She kept asking us if we were sure we didn't want to open a line of credit, and we said no thank you again. By the time we paid for the shirts, the salesperson asked us a total of 5 times if we wanted to open a line of credit. Seriously???? Omg, Again no thank you. I didn't say anything to her about it but it really got on my nerves. I'm sure that a lot of people would have said something when she asked the third time. So what do you think?? Would you have said something??

There are people in the mall who would ask if people would want to have a credit card. And that irritates me, too. Coz they insist on getting you one. I politely decline. But if the salesperson rubs it on too much, during a bad day, I could really be sarcastic.

Yeah, well maybe she is successful with being as persistent as she was. She could also have "thick skin" so when people snap at her it doesn't really bother her. Oh well, I guess there is no way to tell now.

Yeah me too, It must have been that saleswoman's lucky day because I didn't say anything, but she probably got a few snappy remarks for other shoppers because I'm sure I wasn't the only one she did that to.

I think that the techniques that they do can really catch potential clients coz there are people who can easily be persuaded. Too bad, not all could be that way.

I'm in a sales myself & I hate that... There were few times when I went to a store, there was a sales girl who decided to be really persistent... So I decided to ask her out... "Seems like you can't stop talking to me... You wanna grab a cup of coffee after your work?"... She gave me a funny look so I kept on asking her over & over again... Nobody bothered me since...

I have had various clerks ask me that also but never 5 times. Thats a bit too much. Usually they will ask when there is some sort of promotion for signing up for a credit card with their store. For instance, you might get a 15% discount on your purchase if you sign up. I wonder if the clerk gets anything for getting a certain amount of people to sign up?? I'm not sure if I would of said anything or not but I imagine her manager got complaints on her if she was doing that to everyone. Smart of you to not take a Sears card. I had one a few years ago. I used it to get my washer and dryer. I did not think I would ever ever get that thing paid off. It started out all fine and well until the day came when one of my payments reached them a day late. They gave me a late fee which was fair enough but then they lowered my limit to below what I still owed and then charged me an over the limit fee which between the two made my min. payment higher than what I could afford. My interest rate went up and it was just a freakin nightmare.

I think I have learned my lesson on accepting credit cards, they always get me into trouble. At the time I thought, oh why not, I can afford the payments, WRONG!!! Only if I knew then what I know now. lol

Yep. I learned my lesson the same way...tough lesson to learn. Now all I have is my JCP card which I almost never use and one credit card that I have never used. It would have to be a real emergency for me to touch it. If I don't have the money then I just do without.

That is what I do now, if we can't afford it then we probably don't need it that bad. I do get the urge to get things I really don't need, but then when I start thinking about the credit card payments, I quickly snap out of it.

I'm considered a shy type of person but that would have gotten me so upset. Don't even ask twice are you kidding me. I said no once and that should have been the end of it. Once she asked the second time I would have said please don't ask me again I just said no to you. I have never had a saleperson at the check out counter ask me but once and if I found everything I was looking for. The thing that gets me upset while shopping is the sales people on the floor who are constantly watching you or asking if you need help more then once. If I need help I will seek you out. That is so common sense to me, why don't they get it?

I think those type of salespeople (the ones that are pushy) have a different type of personality because me being the way I am, (not pushy) I couldn't do that even if I had to. I would never be good at it. They probably would fire me the first few days.

I am sure she just wanted to do her job well, and did not mean to irritate you. It just happens. It can get irritating, I know. Maybe non-verbal communication might help. Silence is golden and reward her with a smile and move on.

Yes, sometimes getting into an argument or whatever is bad and I try to avoid getting to that point, I think that is why I didn't say anything at the time. I was in a good mood and I wasn't going to let something like that ruin it. If it happens again, I don't know.

so sorry that you had that happen to you one of the things with sears is they have a rule that they have to open so many new accounts per pay period or month in order to keep the job that they have it is sad they have to but we will just about do anything to keep the pay checks that we have

Hi blackrusty I wrote a comment but it disappeared, gggrrroooaannn!! I mainly said that I didn't realize that they could lose their jobs if they didn't hit their quota. That is sad, maybe the girl helping me at Sears was at the end of her month and she was panicking. I will certainly keep that in mind next time we go there.

They're under a lot of pressure to hit a certain quota or else their job is on the line. I understand this because I've been in that position. They really shouldn't be so pushy though. I had the same thing happen to me when I was at Sears. I told her I don't shop there enough to sign up for any of their programs.

Yeah, I realize now after reading some of the responses that there is a quota to be made, but she should've have known better to ask so many times. I know I won't be so nice next time. I know that sounds awful but the more I think about it the madder I get, lol

I actually think that's very bad sales tactics which possibly might put people off visiting the store altogether.

I know you are right, like I did avoid going back a few times because of that. It's sad really, that if they put so much pressure on the salespeople to do that.

oh, yes, i could have said something but like how you've done it, it will be politely uttered. these sales people can truly get into one's nerves. i understand that they're just doing their work but please, the persistence can truly be annoying at times!

yes, very annoying, sometimes I think that they enjoy doing it. Like the ones that don't even smile, they just have a little smirk on their face like they are enjoying my discomfort. Oh well, lol

I agree. they are so persistent to convince people to buy their products..We understand that they need to be like that but they should aware also that some are don't want their style.

Exactly, there are other places that I can take my business and then they are left with less customers. I wonder how many people that saleswoman drove away that day. I'm really curious.

Oh I would definitely have said something. Not only to her but to her superior. They need to know when some of their strategies don't work and irritates customers. They can really get overboard sometimes. If I was in a bad mood I might have told the salesperson "Did you hear me? Or you don't understand what I just said?". I'll ask her questions like did your supervisor asked you to ask the customers more than twice and if he did I'd like to talk to your supervisor. I'll make sure that she is wasting her time by making her stop what she's doing, complaining to her and the super, and demand for a resolution for the inconvenience she caused me. Inconvenience that she made me a mad customer instead of a happy one.

Oh yeah, and then you could ask the supervisor for a discount for inconveniencing you. That is a good idea.

Hi friend, some sales persons are in this sort, they try their maximum to convince the customers and made them to buy the product or open an account to get their commission, they don't care about the customers privacy. They know that their activity is irritating the customer, but they will do their work and try their best to make a sales lead. If i am in your situation, i will simply move from the place ASAP to avoid wasting my time

One thing I could do is stop whatever I'm doing and just walk away. Leave my purchases there and just leave, do you think they would get the point then?

That is pretty annoying. I would be ticked off, If I were you. I have experienced this in the past inside a local shopping mall. A woman approached me and asked me If I own a credit card. I pretended that I didn't see her. To my surprise, when I turned around, she actually had been following me. I asked "what do you want?" Do you have a credit card ma'am? " I don't have a credit card and I don't want to own one" I replied Then, presented a coupon. She told me that I would receive some freebies if my coupon get picked. To cut the story short, I filled out the coupon with wrong information.

Hahahah, that is a good one. When my husband and I go to the mall, the kiosks in the middle of the mall always are trying to pull us in to buy stuff. I pay no attention to them at all. They step up to us and I don't stop, I don't even look at them. Sometimes we just have to be that way, otherwise I would be there all day.

Hi djbrat, Well I have heard of pushy people before but this takes the cake. I have manners too however when they cross the line I would of been sarcastic by the third time and maybe said something like excuse me Mam but do you have a hearing problem I have already said no 3 times. I can be nice just like the next person, but when someone is crossing the line what do they expect.

Yeah, you are right. I think I was in a really good mood that day and it didn't really register to me to be pushy back. Now if I wasn't in such a good mood, I probably would have snapped at her.

Oh, I loathe those salespeople. The worst ones are in the banks, well, the current bank I'm at, they are really nice, but at my previous banks, every single time I went there, they tried to talk me into some really risky business or some crazy insurance, anbd when I said no, they didn't stop trying to persuade me. Even when I told them I was a university student with a low-to-non-existent income, who wants to have a normal rate deposit...

I know, when I'm standing in line at my bank waiting for a teller, sometimes they will say to come into their little cubicle area and they get take care of me right away. OH boy, here we go I think, they ALWAYS try to get me to sign up for something. I just tell them I'm in a really big hurry and don't have time to hear their sales pitch.

That is pretty annoying. Well, it is their job to sell, and it will earn them more if they manage to convince lots of customers to take on their offer, but they must learn that anything done in excess is bound to give bad results. I think asking the same question twice is more than enough. If the seller didn't manage to make a convincing pitch on the first try, she can get to try again. But after that, that means no deal.

Exactly, i feel could drive people away more than bringing them in. It's not just annoying, it can make people angry. Like for me, I don't get angry easily, but that was overdoing it.

Hi mariaperalta, No, I didn't say anything to anyone in the store, but I probably should have. I mean if she does that to everyone that she takes care of, there will no doubt someone telling her off. I didn't want to be rude but that was just overly persistent.

I also hate people like that. It looks like they forced us to open a new credit line while we already say several times, often more than three times that we don;t want to. It's really ineffective to force customers who don't want their products. Like some saying "The salesman who knows when to walk away, lives to sell another day". Since there is no point to be persistent with customers who won't accept to buy their products.

Exactly, and it also puts a bad impression on the company they are selling for also. I've always really enjoyed going to that particular Sears branch but now I when I step in there, I think of that salesperson.
