Ganguly questions Dhoni's position as number one Indian captain

Although record says so, but as per Ganguly best captain is the one who win matches abroad for his team. Which i think is a good point, and which means Ganguly himself is the best captain ever for India. Good one dada, you can hit SIX even when you are not in the field :)

I agree with Ganguly, but it is also important to win matches at home. So yes, Dhoni still has to improve his record overseas, but so far he is doing pretty decent. In fact, I have been one of the big critics of Dhoni's captaincy in test matches. But in the last two matches, he suddenly seems to have come to terms with the difference of the format and seems to be settling in, which is great news. Cheers! Ram

What should poor Dhoni do? When he is losing matches abroad, we curse him. When he is winning matches at home, we say he should win overseas. That's too negative. Remember, Dhoni took 45 Tests to record 22 wins - one more than Ganguly. Ganguly took 49 Tests to get 21 wins. If we put aside these two wins, I remember, Dhoni's last win had come in June 2011. Since then he had 8 straight losses. So imagine Dhoni's rate of success before losing these 8 games. Ganguly is nowhere near Mahi. He should accept that fact. Maybe because he is Dada, he must be finding it difficult.

I will support ganguly in this topic,if you can win in abroad, you will definitely be the No.1 captain.I think in last two tests against australia, dhoni is bit lucky.Aussies are themselves to blame for their defeats in those last 2 tests, with all those superlative performances of Ashwin,Dhoni,Kohli,Pujara and Vijay are taken into consideration, still aussies did played some poor cricket. But i don't blame dhoni alone,in overseas tours you should need few good fast bowlers and batsman with good temperament which he didn't have on those tours.

Ganguly doesn't have any kind of animosity with anyone in the team, even with Dhoni. He is India currently best analyser of Indian cricket and he is the one who think that players real test will be on foreign soil. Even when India were no 1, he used to say that Dhoni test will be in England and Australia and Dhoni failed miserably there. His own performance was pathetic on those tour. Dhoni is still not a good batsman of Test matches. If the ball moves a little bit, he cannot stay at the wicket for much time.

But in ODI he is able to play when ball is moving a lot. Because a lot of snicks of Dhoni goes in vacant place but in Test that doesn't happen. But Dhoni now try to shuffle a little on the offside to negate out swing but sometimes a sharp in swing undone Dhoni. But I still feel that Dhoni can score runs in all parts of the world in Test matches.

Completely agree with you. Dhoni can be a good captain or a good batsman on the flat tracks or spin tracks, but he struggles a lot on tracks where ball moves, swings. When captain is such, he can't guide his team what to do and how to perform better on such pitches.

I cannot entirely disagree with what Ganguly has said about assessing Indaian captains based on their overseas performances. With a little variation, all Indian captains have been successful on Indian turf but some have failed miserably overseas. There's no doubt Dhoni's has been really good as captain but he only be considered the greatest if his overseas record improves considerably.

I don't understand why Ganguly is speaking this way these days. The more surprising thing is that these statements are coming after the Indian win over Australia. That win promoted Dhoni as the most successful Test captain. Secondly, let's put the home wins and overseas win aside. I saw a link on a cricket web site that gave the details of India's most successful Test captains - the list headed by Dhoni followed by Ganguly. Now, not every time will there be a mention that Mr. so and so has won a certain number of Tests at home and the remaining overseas. What matters is the win. Ultimately Dhoni will still be regarded at the best captain for India even if Ganguly keeps crying foul. I have lost all the respect for Dada. Why didn't he make these comments before the Hyderabad Test? I think he is getting jealous of Dhoni's success. Dhoni is the only captain for India who has given us two WCs. How many has Ganguly given?

Yes,I too agree with Ganguly. Any team can win matches in their home. But it's quite difficult to go abroad, play there and win matches. Moreover I will say that Ganguly always got a new team to fight with. On the other side Dhoni got a team which can be said as the best in the world and winning matches with such an experienced players with that much talent is in fact is not a tedious job, in my opinion. I can say that most of the talented players whom I mentioned here came in to the team during Ganguly's era.

I also think that most talented players got their opportunities and came during the time when Ganguly was captain.

That was an interesting comment from Ganguly.Personally from test perspective, i think Dhoni has not so successful abroad compared to Ganguly. But then his luck was not on Dhoni's side.He had a list of injured resources and out of form players.Ganguly' wins abroad had some of the players in good if not peak form.Next thing,is in ODI abroad or in India, Dhoni has a greater success than Ganguly. But looking more things in stastics, it seems most of Dhoni' success has been with weaker teams at home or abroad. The only exception has been South africa. He could nail England and Aussies.Ganguly in tests nailed England and Aussies in one or other. And test cricket is a big thing.Another big thing to be noted is,Dhoni was a given a team known to be match winners.Ganguly turned the team to match winners. He had put some effort.Plus if i need to look at an aggressive and energetic captain even today,Dada is the man.We definitely know his presence when he is captaining. That aggression and passion to win is something that defined him and team under him.So even at this point of time,i do consider Ganguly as the greatest Indian captain though he was unlucky in many perspectives. Thanks!

I also think that Dhoni is not right now in good form and not able to win matches abroad. I think it would be good to give a break for Dhoni for a series and then to try some others as captain and Dhoni can return back after a series and may be he will be rested and gets more form and able to test matches for team India.
