I just watch ice glaciers breaking up in Greenland and they called it "Calving." I don't understand why it is called that. Does anyone on Mylot know?

When a glacier calves, it's basically giving birth to a new iceberg (or usually a whole bunch of them)...so I would guess that this "birth" is the reason it's called calving. Just like when a cow gives birth to a calf, which is called calving.

They showed how much melted in the first 100 years of recording keeping as compared to the last 10 years. I just wondered why they call it "Calving?"

I'm guessing "calving" means to break away.. (from the 'mother' ice)!

Mother nature provides us so much, if only we took the time to stop and admire all that she offers, I think most of us are guilty of taking everything we see for granted, due to your discussion I have learnt something new today, calving, thank you!

Its means increasing in number by give birth to another living being. In biological term it means to giving birth and multiplying, as an increase in nature is only possible by reproduction which is termed as calving or giving birth to another life.Ice breaking increases the number of Ice glaciers, so this term is used.So any increase of nature can be termed as calving whether living or nonliving.

That sounds like a good explanation. I thought maybe it was called that because it happens in the spring like calving.
