My grandfather had a stroke without being noticed for 3 hours

My father (who is separated with my mom, and is now living back in his ancestral home) noticed from outside the house that my grandfather's comfort room was lit. That was 2:30 pm. But he just ignored it because he was thinking maybe my grandfather was taking a shower or pee time. My grandfather by the way, is already 93 years old. He is already somehow weak, but he can still manage to walk but slowly and take care of himself. My aunt is also there to take care of his needs. But she is not being by his side 24/7 because he doesn't want somebody else to disturb him in his room. He has his own room and his own comfort room. At 4pm, my father again noticed the light from the comfort room. But he again just ignored it. But a question already came out from his mind why is he not seeing our grandfather coming out from his room when he is fond of watching tv at that time. But when he checked the living room, the tv was on so he was thinking maybe my grandfather just went back to the CR again. So he again ignored it because he was busy cleaning and trimming the backyard plants. At 5:30pm, my father already got worried because he has not seen my grandfather coming out, when it is already his meal time (Yes my grandpa eats that early). So he knocked the door of my grandfather's room. When he heard no response, he immediately called my aunt to get the door keys. When they opened, they saw our grandfather lying down at the shower room, naked and all wet because the shower was still on. They immediately helped him get up. Unfortunately 911 ambulance is not available so he called my cousin to get them to the hospital. CT Scan shows that there is a blood clot in his brain. He also had stroke. Good thing is he doesn't need to undergo surgery because the clot is in the brain canal. It can be treated with medication and just flush them out. But the doctor still cannot assure of his wellness because he is already very old. She cannot tell whether our grandfather can recover back normally. He is still in the ICU until now, and is being closely monitored. He is not declared in coma but he is always asleep. The doctor explained that the swell in his brain makes him fall asleep. And even if he is awake, he cannot open his eyes. he only responds through movements of his hands... I hope and pray our grandfather will recover quickly and live a normal life again. We do not want him to suffer in pain...

Same thing ever happen to my RIP aunty. She had stroke while she was taking nap. She used to get into her bedroom after lunch to watch TV while laying on the bed. It was rainy day and all of us were very sleepy because nothing to do or any plan to go out even thought it was weekend. We don't know since when she got stroke because sometimes when it's rain she will have long nap or stay longer in her bedroom. It was her mobile phone rang and it was in the dining room. My cousin took it and went to my aunty's room to tell her that she got a call. That's when she called my name and asking for help because she saw my aunty is lay on the floor like she fell down from bed. Thank God the doctor safe her.

we just really have no control over situations. we never expected things to happen. though some may have regrets, but we do not need to blame anybody. my father and my aunt is now fighting over that. but we pacify them and let them know that it was nobody's fault.

Sad to hear about this story. I will pray for your grand father for his speedy recovery. I wonder why your parents are very careless to take care of this old man. I feel pity for him.

It is sad that he had to lie there so long without any help, but these things happen, especially to the elderly. I hope that he ill recover and have no lasting bad effect from the stroke.

Thank you bellis716. The doctor said he is showing some improvements. so we are happy to hear that. Though we are still worried because he sleeps most of the time. My aunt requested for another ct scan to check maybe there are some nerves affected after he fell and bang his head on the floor. But I hope there is none...

Hi, your grandfather is too old. At the age of 93 he is managing all the things and not giving trouble to anyone. it is good that you have taken to the hospital in time. So he can recover and I wish he can get well soon and become normal

Thank you for your concern. He is a very good man. He really doesn't want to disturb anybody else. He doesn't want to make trouble and he wants everyone to live a good life. We really hope he can recover, though the doctor said there is very lesser chances now...

sorry about your grandfather, do not worry he is going to be alright soon.it happens to most people of that age and doctors these days work wonders and get them out of it at the earliest. so soon he will be walking around the house.yeah, the sleep is due to the clot, i personally had a tiny problem in my head years ago and the only sign was sound sleep apart from severe headache of course. may he get well soon.

Thank you gkutti. That is why my aunt is now requesting for another ct scan to see if the clot was already flushed out, and also to check whether there are some nerves or veins affected after he fell and bang his head on the floor. But we still need to talk to the doctor about that. I'm glad you also recovered from your illness. Any issues pertaining to brain is really alarming as they are all considered critical. Though doctors declare that clinically the patient is okay, we really couldn't help but to worry...

Ohhhh, that's too bad for the old man! He is 93 and at the age is living by God's grace. As he seemed to be doing well before that, then who would ever think that could happen to him? But things like that happen. I pray it is not serious and he would recover in time.

My aunt is actually watching over him but not 24/7 because he still can move on his own. So you are right, we really did not expect that it will happen. Well unfortunately it was serious because he bang his head on the floor which caused a blood clot on his brain. But we are just thankful that he doesn't need to undergo surgery. Thanks for your well wishes.

It is so difficult to give the elderly their own space and still keep close watch. i am sorry your family finds it's self in this position and yet the fact that Granfather has been able to live at home is a real blessing. Understanding that hie elderly body will take a long time to heal is another thing that is hard to accept, but prayer for God's best outcome can give comfort, remember to put it in God's hands and let go of worry. Blessings

Thank you savypat. It is really hard to accept the facts especially for my aunts who really took care of him at home. It is easy to say that our grandfather being in old age possibly cannot recover. But it is hard to think and even imagine if it will happen. So we are still positive on his prognosis. At the same trusting God whatever His will is...

You are lucky to have a grandfather at this time still living at the age of 93.. Now let's pray for his recovery and we hope that he will still enjoy to stay here on earth together with you all. At his age it is really difficult to leave him unattended. He need somebody to be with to take care. Have a happy time with him still take care of him until he got fully recovered.

He is really conscious with his health. When he was still strong enough, he really exerts effort to have a daily exercise routine. He goes walking and joins the early morning tai-chi group in the park. But when he got his arthritis, he can hardly do it already but he is still doing some self exercise and choosing the right food to eat. Maybe that is his reward of doing those, being given a longer life. We just really pray for his fast recovery. At least we see some improvements. The doctor said if his BP will stabilize, he can already be transferred from the ICU to the private room. Thanks!

OMG..aejey, thank god he was found when he was..I can certainly \understand your dad not being so concern after the incidents you explained but at 93 where was your aunt that was supposed to take care of him. I just wonder where she was all that time \if she was responsible for his care...I am not trying to blame anyone but it would seem that an 93 year old person who has a care provider would not have been un-noticed for 3 hours.. Any way I really do hope your grandpa gets better and I am sure the prayers isss the best for him right now...

Thank you bjc. My aunt also has a work as she is managing the trucking business of my other aunt. She actually came home after lunch and he checked on my grandfather and she saw him watching tv. SO she went up to her room and did her computer works, and was actually planning to go down at 5:30 for my grandfather's meal time. But that was what surprised her when my father called her to get the keys. We do not blame anybody also but of course there were some regrets from her and from my father. My father would have have already checked him when he noticed it again at 4pm, etc... But it already happened. So we are all looking forward to positive outcome of his medication. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the lengthy story telling. After reading it, I find myself entertained by the way you described the whole incident. On the other hand, as for your grandfather, I believe that he will get well pretty soon. Yes, he may be aged but doctor did not say that his stroke is really bad. The only thing is that there may be a limit to how normal his life is going to get as he is really old. Certain limitation to his health is meant to be there. Take a good care of him.

Well, that's just me I really feel like I need to include all the details in my story for the reader or listener to understand. The doctor just said that he is just fortunate the blood clot composed in the brain canal, so he doesn't need any surgery to take it out. But she explained that there is still no assurance as to when he will fully recover because of his age and capacity. His blood pressure is still unstable and he is still in the ICU now. But the good thing is, he is already conscious though he still can't open his eyes. He is now responding through movements. He is also struggling to talk. At least we see some good signs that his brain is still functioning. I just hope he will recover very soon.

He is lucky to be discovered just in time. Some people who got sudden stroke attack never regain consciousness as help came too late. Just pray that your grandfather recover soon.

I guess he is just a good man that is why God still saved him, and gave us hope that he can recover. He is still in the ICU now, but the doctors are telling us that he is improving. He is responding now to their command. The only problem is, he cannot understand the nurses because my grandfather is Chinese. So he only listens and responds to his neurologist (who is also a Chinese), and to my aunts.

I am so sorry that your grandpa is sick. Even though we know that he is that old and weak, we still want him to be around his loved ones. I pray that he may be able to surpass this and be given longer years to live.

Thanks. We know that at his age, we cannot be assured that he can still stay with us longer. We must admit people's life on earth has limits. But we just do not want that at his age, he will suffer from that critical state. But we are still thankful that he is a fighter himself.
