I was given some red rice but I've never cooked or eaten it before that I can remember. Is it very different from brown rice? Any ideas on how to use it?

It just takes a little longer to cook, but its a healthier option to white rice. I have switched over to red rice now.

Thank you! This was asked a long time ago, and I have since forgotten what I did with it, but I have never bought it again. Maybe I should.

@gudheart Red rice or brown rice are basically the same. Some varieties do have a deep red and have a rich flavor. The benefits are the same as both are unpolished and the fiber remains intact. Its is also rich in iron.

Because my grandfather before lived in a paddy field area. He used to listened to what my great grandmother told him about the rice story.

I have never heard of this or seen it. Wonder where you would find something like this, and is it colored like this because maybe it is more tomato based in taste? I know myself I have ate Brown, white and Yellow rice. Never cared for the brown at all, but the yellow is not bad.

My daughter bought it at an Asian market here. I don't know if they all carry it or not - I'd never seen it before either. I don't think it has anything to do with a tomato flavor, but who knows? It's really red in the package.

You are going to have to let us know what it taste like. I have never seen something like this in our Asian stores, but yet I don't think this is something that I would be looking for.

Wow, really, something you don't kn ow about cooking? Of course I wouldn't know, but I had to stop by and see what the others said,in case I happen to get some. Seems like your second response had the answer for you. Let us know what you think.

I'm afraid there is a lot I don't know about cooking! I only know "down home" and from scratch types of cooking. Red rice is new one for me.

Oh, well to me it seemed like you know A LOT about cooking, including something new like red rice... (which probably isn't really new, just to us)

I've never heard of red rice. I have no idea what the difference is or how you prepare it. What did you end up making with it?

Hi, I never heard about red rice. I think some red color would be added while cooking.

It's grown that way, like brown rice (which is white rice not polished). It's interesting.

I have never came across the red ones but would like to try it though. I like the home grown maroon colored ones and the sticky ones from my native home town. I think there is no different way to cook rice no matter what color they are.

I don't know anything about maroon rice, either! Are there certain times you use it instead of some other rice?

I've made dirty rice. It's not a type of rice, but a recipe or way of fixing it. I noticed that you can buy it in a box now. It's good!

May be red rice contain higher level of certain nutrient and mineral than white rice, changes the color of the rice, i'm pretty sure the cooking method is the same as white rice or brown rice. After thoroughly washes the rice, add in several cup of water and place them in the rice cooker, and then let the rice cooker do the rest for you. The taste may be a bit different than you can find in white rice or brown rice.

That's what I'm thinking, that the taste may be a little different. I wonder if it takes longer to cook than white rice? I know that brown rice does.

I think there are several varieties of rice, brown , black, the polished white but this is the first time I heard about red rice. I guess it is high in fiber like any other colored variety, since it's not common. For me, I think there is no special technique on how to cook red rice, it's the same as the other variety but I think they are more nutritious than the ordinary rice.

I'm sure it cooks up the same as others, but I wonder if it takes longer? And if there are special recipes for it...

Cooked rice is our daily food, but I see something of red rice now.I have eaten it before and it tasted good.It isn't the brown rice. You wash it before putting it into electric rice cooker, then add water into cooker ,let the water be just above the back of your hand when your hand lies flat on the rice. Now, it is time you cook it.It is done when the cooker sends out lovely rice smell.

Red and brown rice is different. They are the different type of rice but like brown rice, red rice also maintains the bran, resulting in a chewy, nutritious rice. Red rice is mainly grown in Europe, India and Southeast Asia. Brown and red rice come from different types of seeds, but are equivalent in nutrition and cooking time. The main difference is the taste, which is a matter of personal preference.

I've never even seen red rice before. Rice is rice, I guess. I can't see that it would be any different. I like brown rice.

I don't know that it's any different, but I didn't want to try to use it in a familiar dish and be unpleasantly surprised! I like brown rice, too, and that's usually the only kind I have on hand.

There is no different in cooking any other rice but as I heard red rice is more beneficial to our health compared to other rice.
