They saved up for 6 years and went on a cycling trip around the world

It is such sad news to read two British cyclists on a round the world trip were killed in Thailand. They had been hit by a 25 year old truck driver in a province east of Bangkok. They had begun their cycling journey in July 2011 and they died in February 2013. They had safely gone through Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia before meeting their death in South East Asia. Rest in peace Peter Root and Mary Thompson from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The truck driver was severely injured and he is going to be charged with dangerous driving. What do you think?

It's a good idea. They did almost get back home and to have this happen. I wonder if the truck driver was drunk at the time.

Yes to go so far and then have your life suddenly snuffed out from you. And I would bet they did not see it happen. Did he hit them from behind?

I imagine the truck driver was drunk. He must feel awful about what he did now. The couple had really enjoyed their trip up until then. I am glad they loved their trip but it had a tragic ending.

Hello Black Rusty. Yes, it made me so very sad to read that. That lovely couple were planning a relaxing break in New Zealand to rest from the cycling. It is indeed wonderful that they got some of their trip completed.

Such a tragic waste of life, no one knows what's around the corner, that is why it is important to get the most we can out of life, sometimes I wonder if we should live today as if it's out last, difficult to do I know, but that way we can cherish the things we DO have and the people closest to us, because we don't know how many tomorrows we have. I think it's sad saving up and looking forward to an epic trip only for that to happen.

Thanks for your excellent response Wolfie. We don't know the future and life is the same length as an unknown piece of string. It must be horrible to die in a foreign country in a tragic accident. I know 6 years because that is nearly my son's life so far. It was an epic trip and well done to them cycling all that way. I so wish that the accident in Thailand hadn't happened that caused them to lose their lives.

Hello Maximax I hope that you are fine! This is a very sad story, that driver was very irresponsible.

I had not heard of this before reading your discussion. How very sad to read this story. To save money for six years and to lose their lives in two years after starting this expedition. That is sad but at least they had a year in half to enjoy their trip. How was the driver of the truck driving, dangerously due to being drunk or just driving recklessly?
