Someone once told me that she prefers buying fitness/gym equipment such a treadmill, stationary bike, etc since in the long run, it's less expensive. She said rather than paying for membership fees in the gym, she'd rather invest her money in fitness equipment. If you compute and add up the monthly or annual membership fees, it has the same worth as the gym equipment. Which brings me to my question. What do you think is more expensive -- paying monthly/annual membership fees or investing in a gym equipment? Note: consider factors such as transpo expense, food, usage of equipment, electricity and the like :)

I just re-started my membership at Planet Fitness. I paid $20 to start the membership the first month, and pay $10 every month to maintain it. I use the elliptical, rowing machine, bike, mats, barbells, dumbbells, and weight machines on a regular basis. It is completely air conditioned and there are water fountains everywhere. Assuming I stay for 12 months, I will pay $130 for a year of these facilities. How much fitness equipment can I purchase for this amount? The distance to the gym is 2 miles, so transportation is not a huge expense either.

Elliptical: $200 Rowing machine: $200 Bike: $150 Barbell set: $100 Dumbbell set: $50 I would also have to have a larger apartment to keep the equipment and turn on the air conditioner to keep the room cool while I work out. I think it is much more economical for me to go to the gym. When money is tight, I cancel my membership and just do pushups and go running outside...however, there are lots of snowy/rainy days where I live which kinda kills my motivation. It feels good to leave the apartment and have some space to move.

Of course that's your choice and I do respect that :) Although there are those who prefer buying the gym equipment and work out at home. And good thing you can camcel or freeze your membership. Some fitness companies don't even allow that.

Well it depends on what you're planning to purchase. I'm not really familiar with the prices of the equipment in your place. But from where I came from, if you compute it in the long run, some gym equipment are cheaper to buy compared to paying membership fees :)

Yes it's probably cheaper in the long run if that's what they want to do and enjoy. Some people just like going to the gym and get more motivated to work out that way and there is more variety of things to use in the gym. Me, I personally like to workout at home. I don't even need equipment to do it.

That's true also. There are those who prefer going to gym since they feel more motivated to work out when they see other people doing the same as well. I think its more on being able to push themselves to work out harder that's why they prefer than rather than buying their own equipment.

It is cheaper for sure but what is good with going to the gym is that you are like going to a community where people think the same as you are. You are all in there for a specific reason. The energy in the gym also keeps one motivated instead of just doing it alone at home.

That's true :) Although there are others who don't like going to the gym and are more motivated working out home. I guess it really depends on the preference of the person on where s/he's more comfortable with.

Buying gym equipment is a smart investment. I gained weight and stated gym but I can't make it everyday. Sometimes I feel so lazy I couldn't get out of my sweat pants. I wish I have space in my house to keep all that stuff which I use in gym, that's definatly a good decision. It will save you time and money.

The thing about buying your own gym equipment is that you'll be forced to use it everyday because you'll always see it and think about the money you've spent on buying the equipment :))
