Is it hard to be vegetarian?

The vegetarian diet is getting more popular due to its health benefits. My friends who are vegetarian look good and they are not overweight. I am trying to lose weight, therefore I am thinking of changing to vegetarian diet. However, I am not sure if I can succeed without giving up half way. Do I stop eating meat immediately? What about eggs and milk? How do you make vegetarian dishes?

i love meat and fish so if someone would impose a vegetarian diet on me, i'll have a very, very hard time. i too have heard that lots of people have lost weight with the vegetarian diet. why not try avoiding salt and eliminating oil and sugar in yours? this worked for a friend of mine, she lost almost 5 kilos in two months.

Right now my diet is already less sugar, less oil. Maybe is the age catching up with me, my metabolism drop. Also I am too busy to exercise. Work and home issues are keeping me from healthy lifestyle.

I think it is good to have good diet and also do some walking and this will helps to lose weight.

A vegetarian is only not eating: meat and fish and chicken so animals who are killed to eat. So you can eat eggs, cheese, yoghurt, etc etc. A vegan is not eating animals or products made by or from animals (which would include the milk the eggs, etc). I am not a 100% vegetarian but I do eat meat seldom. Not because I do feel pity for the animals but because meat is expensive and I can do without it (I don't miss it). I don't buy substitutes or eat substitutes instead of the meat. Just delete it from the "plate"/menu. We also do not drink milk. What we eat is a lot of fruit, all kinds of! (= breakfast) and vegetables. We also eat a lot of cheese and once in a while we have yoghurt. We do eat as less as wheat (Products) as we can and as less as carbohydrates since this is toxic for the body and carbohydrates do make one gain weight. I don't think you will lose much weight if you change into a vegetarian and take all the substitutes they buy/use instead of meat. I think you better start reducing the amount of carbohydrates (so no bread, no pizza, no pasta/spaghetti, no cookies, no pancakes, no potato chips, no soft drinks unless they are diet ones, no Sugar. I am sure you will lose weight very fast that way. If you want to skip meat from your menu start reducing it first since it takes time to change a habit plus the way you were used to cook as well. BTW I use eggs as a kind of pan-pizza. Just add everything you like to the egg and fry it in a pan with the lid on it. If you like it you can even add some (fry them first) pieces of potatoes. There are plenty of soups you can eat, if you like pancakes make them with a lot of eggs and very less wheat flour. You can even make pancakes with water instead of milk. Most vegetarians I know are not slim and they also don't look healthy at all so I think it all depends on the complete lifestyl as well. The best way to succeed is to find someone who will join you. We changed our lifestyle in more healthy food, less toxics (toxics make fat so are transfats! and a lack of sleep) and carbohydrates. In 10 weeks time my 9 year old son lost 6 kilo. Now his weight stays the same and he is also able to eat something extra (including some cookies or chocolate or an ice cream). At the same time I lost 10 kilo and I hope to lose some more weight.

If you are not able to go for vegetarian diets every day tries to go vegetarian days after alternative days or once in three days or once, etc. There are lots of good recipes in vegetarian dishes. I would suggest you to eat more fruits and fruits are good for health.

dear tehpau, it is always good to be a vegetarian. but do not try to become pure vegetarian. if everyone becomes vegetarian certainly there will be a shortage of food to feed human being. so my suggestion for you to keep eating fish which is very good to health. have a nice day!

Thanks, I will think about this. Fish is actually more expensive than chicken over here. I am still thinking of ways to cook my vegetables. Eating the same old thing daily will make me quit faster.

been a vegetarian all of my adult life and a vegan for the past 4 years. I can say one thing, do it. Sometimes it makes it easier if you see videos of slaughter (I don't recommend this, but for some it helps reinforce their diet). I would go straight for the Tofurky. look up Tofurky, start to buy their sausages. Not kidding, in taste tests, some people cannot tell the difference if prepared right. Tofurky is a great meat sub, it's made of veggie protein and tastest really really well. If you get them at Trader Joes they are very inexpensive, if you purchase them at a regular super market, they will price them up. Go to www.vegetarianstar.com. This is a nice blog full of the latest recipies and books on the subject. Start slow. Give up mammal and bird flesh and just live on fish for a while, as you grandfather in the tofurkey. Make sure you get your vitamins, some people need soy milk for b12. I've been doing it all my adult life, and people have judged me at way younger than I really am, so it does help. I also have no aches and pains, like others. This is a good path however heed this ONE warning: Soft Vegetarianism. This means that people soon learn that lots of junk food, even oreo cookies, are vegetarian. They often have a great time just eating junk food in the beginning. that is where the term 'soft vegetarian' comes in. So please make sure you eat well and you should be fine. Remember to add a variety of oil to your diet. Often, you are not craving meat, but fats. Many, once they add oils to their diet, the meat craving disappears faster.

well, thank you for sharing. but for me it is opposite... while i used to eat non veg i was really in good shape but from the time of living in india and eating veg i became overweight and i should be always carefull.. here in many food they use potato and lots of oil and butters... i wish for the time that i used to eat chicken and meat i was really better. it is good to make veg food healthy. using less oil and spices. taking fresh fruits and salads.

Yes Indian dishes contains lots of spices and some of them contains oil. I think some people use less oil while some others does use more of them.

Yes. I believe Indian cooking can be quite oily sometimes. Especially the curries. Thanks for the reminder.
