Even after years of English learning, many Chinese people still can not use their English to communicate with people using the language. In most cases, it is just because they dare not try. But now, on the website, starting a discussion that Chinese should not choose English as a compulsory course, some even consider English as the source to row Chinese education. From my own experience, I am not good at English before high school which brought me a lot of problems in entering a good university. While after graduate from the college, it becomes the most power tool in my hand. I think English is quite useful. While comes to the education problem, I just think the education system is the very reason for killing creatives in China.

I think you're being too hard on China! China does try very hard; much more so than we try to learn Chinese - & we should. Hardly anyone learns a language here anymore - massive declines in the past decade. If we learned Chinese here & the Chinese keep learning English, then there's always a chance we could meet half-way eventually. I don't think your education system is at fault. Plenty of Chinese today speak reasonable English & some are extremely good so that many native English speakers would fail to realize that such Chinese speakers of good English are even from China unless they can see them! The problem is that many specialized Chinese business people in all the right places that we need to communicate with & understand & negotiate with do not themselves speak English well. I think time will sort this out, as well as more Chinese staying here for some time to learn English well.

Yes the Chinese should learn English The Western world should also learn Cantonese and Mandarin They should also learn French and maybe Spanish. It is ignorant to expect the Chinese to learn our language and us not do the same in return. The more languages one speaks the better. My Eldest daughter speaks three languages, her sister and brother are being taught French and German at school

Yes, I think it's useful to learn English. A lot of people from other countries where English is not their native language are also learning English. Learning another language can become a great asset to you in this global market. Although my country's primary language is English, I still try to study other languages. I think learning other languages is great because it can help provide you with better opportunities.

I also thin English is very useful. In present time, without knowing English, we can even not use the function of internet. So I can not understand why there are so many Chinese think English is useless. Furthermore, the culture and the habit of English speaking countries now have a great effect on our lifestyle and ideas. If we do not know English well, how can we accept them.

It's hard to learn other languages if they are not your mother language. Me too, I am a Chinese and I do agree that we should learn English because English is an international language. Trading and communicating with foreigners, we use English. It's a challenge task to learn good and fluency English. I would suggest you go to an English background country and stay there for 2 to 3 years. Your English would surely be improved then.

Learning English is definitely a plus point, especially if one plans to study or work overseas. It is not a hard to master the language. If Westerners can learn Chinese, I do not see why Chinese people cannot speak English. If you can master English, more opportunities will open up for you.

Even do not have chance to study abroad or travel to other countries, there are still many chances to use English today. If you want to get a good payment, we may have to work in an oversea company where a lot of co-workers are using English. And in many cases, you will have to read the instruction in English before you use the products. While here many people still think English is useless. I can not image that what a small world they have to live in.

If English is the international language then I think it is important for anyone of whatever culture to learn how to speak this language. It is a plus factor although it does not mean you cannot be successful if you don't know this language.

To learn another language its an individual choice! to me I learnt other languages because I was eager to know how a poem or a novel sounds like in it original language! I agree English in todays world is a must! if you know English and Spanish I think you are quite safe traveling the world.

My mother tongue is also not English but I tried my best to learn the language because is would be a great advantage if one understand and speaks it. It's one of the language used globally, so it would be a plus for us. These may pose a problem to some nationalistic countries because they insist to adapt their own which I think is very useful in most ways. But, today many of such countries were encouraging their people especially professionals to learn to understand and speak the language so that they can communicate globally with ease.

Hi, Like other have said, learning English si a plus but I guess it comes to some points where it ahs been treated as a compulsory. . Perhaps, some cultures might think that it is not needed if you regard some degree or nationalism and patriotism. But it is always the choice of people whether they should it ir not and for what reason. In some instances it may be viewed as some sort of elitist or class status but aside form that it should be reminded of its primary role- to enable communicate two parties using one language. Whether an expert or a novice, it is always a challenge to learn a and use a new language but the goal is always the same- to send a message to one another. Personally, it’s up to the Chinese how should they regard it. For me, it’s a tool to know and understand people. Of course, I am guilty of abusing it sometimes.

English, like any other language, is just a tool. It just so happens that it is the common denominator for business. I am sure it will be very useful for any English-speaking person to learn Mandarin if they go to China. The experience will be just as bizarre for a Chinese learning English. However, I do know several English who can speak Mandarin much better than I do. The education system varies from country to country. In my country, we are taught English and Chinese from young, so while I do not consider myself as being proficient in either language, at least I do not find them foreign.

Since English is one of the most important languages in the world. Actually it has become to be a global language already. So I think it is better for us to learn it. The problem is our education. It is not practical. Look at the English education in Hong Kong, it works well. I think it also gives them benefits. And their certification is approved all over the world because of it.

English is an international language, so it's obvious that every nation should promote English learning to their citizens right from kindergarten days. It took years for non-English speaking nation to correctly write and speak English. Learning any language other than mother tongue is not easy. Yes, I know that China is hell-bent not to encourage English language and that it is killing creatives in China.

Yeah, not only Chinese people but also all kinds of raise. I am a Filipino and based on my experienced here in my country, English language is a must to learn and understand because it is a universal language. Being an English proficient, we can be able to be competent and communicate well to the western countries which English is their native language. Here in my country, I could say that we can communicate well with English language because all institutions here observes English proficiency.
