So the government decides that foreign students have to learn the local language if they want to study in Malaysia. But the problem is the foreign student don't understand the basics of the language and you want them to learn something advance? I learned the language when I in kindergarten and I learn only the basics that time and slowly work my way up to the advance level of the language. And now the government made it compulsory to learn that? And not just that, they even probably need to learn Moral studies (it's in English anyway) and Malaysian studies (also in English).

I have not got this development in the news but if it is true, I don't think it is a good idea. I am also not surprised if this news is genuine as there are many over-zealous people in the present government who think of ways just to show that they are patriotic and loyal to their cultural roots without taking into consideration the usefulness and practicality of their ideas.
It is too much to ask foreign students to learn a language in order to pursue their studies here. Do they think that it is easy to pick up a totally new language in one or two years to be used as the medium for their studies? I can see that it will be a "good" policy to scare away potential international students.

That's exactly what I think. I have a feeling that the government do this is because they wanted to make the Malaysian local language famous. But what's the point? The entire world requires the English language and they are not going to change that. Unless you're planning to work in Malaysia instead but even working withing that country itself require the English language. Oh no.. They won't be learning the language in just one or two years. It'll be a couple of months seeing that the semester with that subject will only last a couple of months then they will move on to new subjects.

Good luck to your Universities. They will be the ones at the receiving end. For international students there are many other attractive destinations.
