I think the neighbor uses the smoke alarm as a diner bell.

We are living in a government housing duplex. The other unit is mirror image of ours. We get a bit of a chuckle because every time they cook a meal the smoke alarm goes off. Thankfully it isn't all that loud on our side. The alarm is pretty sensitive and we've accidentally set ours off as well but not every meal. Hmmm... I hear carbon can be good for digestion.

Thats alittle funny. We used to have that here in governement appts. in mexico. As people would heat day old tortillas on a grill. And lots of smoke would be there. So people disconnected the fire alarms.

We lived in a house where we had to have the smoke alarm relocated. It went off shortly after turning on the stove. I don't think you even had to be cooking anything. The temptation is to turn it off but fire inspectors would have a fit over that.

I'm not actually convinced fire inspectors here work any harder than they do in Mexico. They sure think they're important though.

True, no worry about fire inspectors. They never do anything here. But drink coffee.

haha our seems to go off every time I use the toaster and don't know why that is. It doesn't go off any other time. So now i have to put the fan on from the microwave and it doesn't go off!

Does it wait till the toast is done or does it go right away? Might be crumbs in the bottom of the toaster. I've had a toaster set it off before. It is funny.

Umm I think it mostly happens when the toast is about done. Hmm maybe I just need to clean the toaster properly!! haha thanks!

They can be a bit sensitive at times, I know when mum cooks an omelette it seems to trigger off the smoke alarm, as to when she is cooking father a fried breakfast, our's is really loud and deafening, I know they have to be, but when you are looking forward to a lie in and that the alarm goes off intermittently you know it's pointing staying in bed! We usually open the windows, but when it's freezing outside they don't stay open for long!

During the winter we would prefer not to have to open the windows. If the smoke alarm goes off though that is one of the best ways to quickly solve the problem. We don't have to do it often ourselves.

Maybe the neighbor is making a burnt offering. We used to say that when someone burns a meal. Yes carbon's good for you. Sometimes the smoke alarm is too sensitive. I have mine near the bedroom and away from the kitchen and that helps. So that would help. Move it farther away.

They are located away from the kitchen in these units. That's why I'm surprised they set if off so often. Maybe she really does burn almost everything she cooks.

I don't think they did it intentionally setting of the smoke alarm. Since you said you did set off the smoke alarm before unintentionally, I believe the same may have happened to your neighbor. Maybe it has something to do with how they cook their meals which emits more smoke than yours and thus easier to set off the smoke alarm. I believe maybe the smoke alarm is misplaced a little which the alarm is too easily set off.

I don't doubt that they aren't setting it off intentionally but I don't think that they can put it in a better spot. They're positioned it in the hall in front of the bathroom. That's two rooms away. I don't think it would be wise to hide it further away. Maybe it is a little oversensitive but I'd rather it go off early in the event of a real fire than too late.

It is so scary to see a smoke in smoke alarm . I guess cooking would likely beautiful if done out of house or they call it more as dirty kitchen. This will not affect the smoke alarm. If this happened always then it is no longer good because what if it's real smoke coming from something that is being burned ? How can we respond as quick as possible when we relate it only as smoke alarm.

That is a major issue. What if there was a real fire? We hear it all the time and our thought is always "Oh she's cooking again." In the event of a real fire I want to be able to get my family out right away.

I don't know about carbon being good for digestion, but an alarm going off isn't such great meal time music! I've yet to set off my fire alarm, but I just happened to think that I haven't changed the batteries in quite some time. I probably should do that...

I set off our smoke detector every time I grill anything. Every time. I have no idea why, because I don't burn our dinner, but I no longer grill chicken or veggies. For some reason, it doesn't happen as often for my husband, but he still sets it off occasionally.

Is there a window between the detector and your grill? An open window can sometimes avoid that ear piercing noise.

Annoying as those things are,I'd still rather have one going off to warn of smoke than not be warned of a possible fire..mine has a mounting hole for a nail in the base so it just hangs from one in the wall..and when it goes off,I can get it outside into the clear air so it doesn't drive me batty before the smoke clears! I don't manage to set it off very often, thankfully, but Last week,a piece of thick cut bread stuck in the toaster..wow,that was smoky..

I'm not happy when it doesn't work. If there is a fire I want to get that bit of warning and get my family to safety. The being able to grab it and take it outside into the fresh air real quick is a good idea. I'll have to keep that in mind.

wow hopefully that means fire could not make it over to your side. maybe to theirs is going bonkers as a couple of ours did that till we put in more batteries. it seems the batteries were low. maybe they deep fry a lot and dont open windows also. or maybe they smoke a lot inside and need to open a window when to many smoke to much.

I think that some smoke alarms are very sensitive. We don`t have those in my country, none that I know of. But once, when we went with the family to Orlando, we were staying at a resort and I made the alarm go off. While I was cooking a big seak. I was very much ashamed, but noone came in to see if there was fire.

It does come off as a criticism of the person cooking. I feel that way when it happens to me. Some are too sensitive and some are put in a less than desirable location. It should be well away from the kitchen.

There is nothing more encouraging when you have two pots a cooking, another on the go, four bowls a mixing and chicken in a broccoli tree when that blasted thing goes off. Run around waving tea towel flags yelling I didn't do anything.

Done that before waving the tea towel trying to get it to shut off. Worked the outside door open and closed repeatedly trying to flush the smoke through.

maybe they grill their food that is why there is always plenty of smoke when they cook. that alarm must be highly sensitive. why don't they open the windows when they cook? even if it isn't that loud on your side, it must be irritating in their house. i wonder how they can stand this.

It occasionally goes off when we are frying food but it is rare. If we are doing something that we think might set it off we open the window. I don't know how they can stand the sound. When we set ours off, the sound is enough to drive me out of my skull.

Well, I hope the smoke alarm in your neighbor house will not cause panic to neighborhood.[em]w00t[/.em] My house has smoke alarm but so far it does not goes off. Probably I have a cooker hood and the smoke are being sucked out through the cooker hood. [em]happy[/.em]

That is one thing government housing here should have installed: Hoods over the stoves. That would clear up a lot of that. It's not required by code so they won't shell out the money for that.
