animal hoarding: now a serious problem in the US?

I only came to know how serious this problem is when I watched a marathon of animal hoarding TV shows and that really shocked me. I love animals, I have pets but I know when to say no. I know how hard it is to have pets. You can't go anywhere far without seeing to it that they get fed, etc. In the TV show, some people started out rescuing these animals, which is good, but ended up having these animals taking up their homes. One had as many as 76 cats inside her house. Another one had about 156 chickens inside his home. Another animal hoarder had something like 92 dogs in his house. Now that's really extreme--the amount of dirt that these dogs and cats make is so engrossing, you can't anymore function normally. According to someone, if you have ten pets at home, especially when you could not properly care for them, that is already considered hoarding. Are you an animal hoarder? Or do you know of anyone who is?

It all started probably with 3 cats that did not get spayed. They could multiply so quickly without you knowing it.

They found cats in the cuboards and even in the walls. I can imagine that.

My ex was one of the worst animal hoarders, fortunately I put my foot down! If they had their way the whole house would have been over-run and guess who was left to look after them? My ex was at work all day and I had to look after the four cats and two bunnies. When my ex suggested a dog, I got angry, I am not a dog person and it wasn't fair on the other animals, cats are pretty independent, but a dog, a different story. When I left my ex I found out that they had brought more animals home. Best of it is it was only a small two bedroomed house, which was rented, the landlord would have had a fit as he only allowed us 2 cats! And even then he had to be persuaded, initially it was a NO PETS accommodation, but he relented only if we had all the carpets cleaned professionally, and guess who had to pay for that! Yep ME! I can't understand how people can hoard these kind of numbers? How can you care and give them the time they need?

I cannot imagine how anyone with so many pets to care for can actually give them the attention they need. It is a big problem and your quality of life also diminishes.

My 2 dogs is sometimes too much for me! I cannot imagine having that many animals in the house!! That is crazy! It is hard to find someone to care for them when you want to go anywhere, etc... We have had this problem a few times. There is no way I would take on anymore than what I have already. I love my dogs but 2 is plenty. =) My husband's grandmother has 43 dogs in her house. She breeds them and sells them, which in itself I am totally against. But when you walk in her house dogs are everywhere literally! It is gross to me...

She probably makes breeding as an excuse when in reality she is actually an animal hoarder. Too many is too much. I need time and attention for my three pet dogs and having so many will surely get you to neglect most of them.

It is an exaggerated kind of animal love.

I haven't seen a show like this... but oh my god, these people are crazy. I mean, I know they mean good for the animals, but I'm pretty sure it's suffocating for those poor animals that there is 75 or 91 of their mates are together in a smaller place... let alone it would take a huge amount of time to feed and clean all of them, clean the house after all of them, "educate" them, stop fights that start among some of them. I can just imagine what the house could smell like...

Check it out on Bio channel. It runs reality shows and one of my favorite shows is this animal hoarding. The same channel also features all sorts of hoarders, it's unbelievable.

That is true Cox. We used to have a neighbor who had too many chickens he was actually hoarding them already. It's a good thing they found a bigger place to breed all these chickens. The stink was too much.

having more than one animal in the house would be too much for me. don't get me wrong, i love animals and we used to have pets when we lived in the country. the condo administrators do not allow pets in our place now. how can anyone take good care of 76 cats or 92 dogs? i admire that person but i think i will never survive living in a house full of cats/dogs/chicken. their noise would make me restless and i would slowly go mad.

It's unbelievable how all those things happen but we all saw everything on TV and it's scary when something goes beyond the normal limit.
