Now that I'm forced to become a vegetarian, how do I cook tofu?

I have some health problems that I can help control by giving up meat and seafood. The meat doesn't bother me so much as the seafood but I'll do what it takes to be healthy. I bought some firm tofu today because I know it is good for me and has protein. It looks horrible but I know that people cook it and like it. I heard somewhere that it takes on the flavor of whatever you are cooking with it but I won't be using meat broth or anything flavorful, just vegetables and stuff...stuff, like what?! I'm very frustrated just thinking about it. Any suggestions on how to cook tofu? I imagine the texture is pretty disgusting, too, or is it?

I used to eat the stuff, but only eat whole foods these days - much better for us than all those concentrated soy beans in tofu. I'd even go so far to say that tofu isn't all that healthy. If you really must, just slice it thin, fry it in veg oil, herbs & spices or marinade in soya sauce. Tempeh is more flavoursome (not that I eat that either, but I used to a very long time ago for social occassions, etc). It's important to balance your intake of all the vegan food groups of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains & legumes. If you get really stuck, one of the best ways is to take yourself out to a pure vegan eatery (retaurant, cafe, takeaway, etc) & look, smell & sample taste what they have on offer. Ask the owners for the recipe of anything you like & make it up at home. Every vegan restaurant I know both here & overseas is really happy to do that for you.. Many of these eateries won't be searchable online or in the yellow pages. Just make contact with your local veg*n society & they will have a full list of every single veg*n eatery in your locale, or check their website. All The Best.

Now, why didn't I think of that?! I'll find a local vegan organization and ask them for some advice, thanks so much!

Mavic, that sounds great! Maybe I'll saute it with salsa, which I love, and which has coriander in it. I'll add extra onions and some garlic. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm not veggie, but we eat a fair amount of tofu as we've friends who make soya products as a business. It's not my favourite stuff, but cooked well it can be quite tasty. The trick is cooking it well though as otherwise it's squishy and flavourless! You can marinade it in pretty much anything, but I find soy sauce is the best single ingredient. I usually use some chilli too. Peanut butter is also tasty. I tend to slice it very thin, then pop it some marinade for a while. Then I shallow fry it really hot to crisp it up, and lay it on the top of a rice or pasta with veggies type meal. Have fun experimenting.

Thanks! It will be a challenge to fry it crispy without using oil but I guess that's something I'll learn. I don't think I'll use a lot of it, considering what I've read here, but I want to be able to have as many options as possible with a limited food list. I have some low sodium soy sauce that I think I'll try as a marinade. Thanks again!

You should be able to fry it in a non stick pan without oil. It doesn't tend to stick and burn easily. A veggie diet is easy once you've been doing it awhile. Although I do eat meat (I don't eat fish) I try to only eat the meat we've raised ourselves so it's a treat rather than daily. Don't think about what is missing from your plate, look at it as a way to experience a whole load of different veggie combinations.

I'll do that. Tumeric is supposed to be very healthful so I'll pick some up next time I'm shopping. Thanks!

The only time my daughter uses tofu is when she makes pumpkin pie. There are recipes on the internet.

I've been educated in some ways to fix tofu and I'm sure I'll find ways I like. I have always been fond of Asian food. About ten years ago I found out that the stuff we Americans eat and think of as Asian are not what the Asian people eat. We think of it as deep fried stuff with rich sauces but I saw some workers in the restaurant eating their own meals and they were very different--a little rice, some stir fried vegetables and a very little meat and fish. Quite different from what we gluttons at the buffet were eating! It's no wonder you're healthier than us. Now I'll be eating like that, too, and I'm sure I'll be healthier and feel better. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes I agree it does look highly unappetizing, I had a friend who was always eating tofu, I think I remember how he served it, I know he ate a lot of pasta which goes well with tofu along with steamed vegetables to make it filling, if you add parmesan cheese and tomato sauce dependent on your preference. Stir fry is probably the most popular way of eating tofu or in a vegetable stew. I know he would recommend the fried tofu on a a bap or in bread with lettuce, tomato and if you like mayo to boost the flavour. He did try me on tofu but I didn't take to it to be honest.

I think the Italian angle sounds pretty promising, thanks. Unfortunately, I don't like mayo or tomato--but I love salsa, strangely enough. I'm think of marinating it in fajita sauce now or having it with onions and peppers like another person suggested. Thanks, friend!

Tofu is a wonderful food item. Do what I do when I start to cook with something new. Go on the Internet for instructions. I like firm tofu, and use that form the most.

I got firm tofu, that seemed the best choice for someone who is used to eating meat. I will look it up but I wanted myLotters' personal input first--this community comes up with some great ideas!

Hi Dragon54u, do you mean you have to give up all meat? How about chicken? It is white meat, and generally healthier than red meat. As to your question of cooking tofu, the quickest and easiest is to make soup. You can get the miso soup powder from the supermarket, and just add tofu into it. Another easy soup to make is the tomato, and cabbage clear soup. You add in the tofu into the soup. If you can take egg, just add in one egg into the soup. This will be a very nutritious soup with low calorie content.

It has to do with the purine content, which help uric acid crystals form and stick to the joints. Meat, even chicken, is high in purines and red meat is the worst. I've never had miso soup but have seen it at the store and will try it, thank you!

I'm supposed to eat tofu and other soy products, too, but one of the health newsletters I get tells me to avoid soy products because fluoride is used in their processing and that's not good for me. I'm almost afraid to brush my teeth with fluoride toothpaste. I forget what it's supposed to do to me, but I think it has something to do with getting senile. I tend to forget the details -- just what to avoid. No matter what one eats, some will say it's healthy and others that it's not.
