We've Won a Grant

I opened my email this morning to some fabulous news. I had an email congratulating us on winning a small grant to help develop the infrastructure of the farm. I applied for it on the closing date and was unsure whether our proposal would even be considered so it's a lovely surprise. The sum is not huge, but it should be enough to make a serious dent in the cost of creating a couple of showers which is our proposal. We'll build a RAM pump to draw water from the river, solar heat it, then use the water to irrigate with afterwards. Most of the cost will be in the building materials to create the actual structure. Today we have to make a firm decision of where to site it so that I can take photos to send off. How exciting! Have you ever applied for, or won, a grant?

Hello Green Moo. I am delighted that you have won a grant to help develop the infrastructure of your farm. It will be lovely for you to get a RAM pump to draw water from river which you will be able to solar heat. Then afterwards you can use the water to irrigate your farm's land. I won a grant in 2009 which was a course of driving lessons, two theory tests and two practical driving tests. I did that and amazingly passed my practical driving test in February 2010. I already had a car and it was delightful being able to drive it.

Congratulations! I have never applied for a grant other than to finance my education but it's nice to know that people are giving grants to deserving recipients like you and your farm. I think it's great that you will be building a shower that serves a dual purpose. It's making use of your resources to their fullest extent with nothing wasted. Do you get enough sun there to heat the water? I've taken a lot of cold showers in my time because of the lack of heating and they are not usually pleasant!

In the summer months the water will probably heat to a temperature which is very hot indeed so we may have to shorten the pipes to keep them out of the sun. But in the summer I doubt anyone will mind using the river instead! In the winter months the water should warm providing there is even just a little sun as we'll be snaking it through narrow black piping. It's something we intended to make anyway, but recognition that it's a worthwhile idea is really motivating.

That's kind of you. Thanks. It's going to be a lot of work to put into practice, but we've already made a start and the first sum was deposited yesterday.

congratulations and stupid question... Why do you need to heat the water?

Oh, I missed the part about the shower. I just saw you were using it for irrigation, and couldn't figure out why you would heat it.

Because cold river water makes for a chilly shower unless you heat it!

No wonder your heart leaped with joy at the good news. The grant is really a help rendered in the nick of time. I wonder where you will get the grant from and if you get it at very high interests.

It doesn't need to be paid back. We'll receive it in two stages over the next six months. It came from one of the organisations that we recruit volunteers through.

That sounds really exciting indeed! Congratulations! The closest to that ever happened to me was when my son was offered a college scholarship.

Congratulations that is great news, I have to admit when I first started reading your discussion, I thought, I hope this is not an April Fool's joke, as it's April Fools Day today, fortunately it wasn't. You are now moving forward, I bet you are excited.

That's great news and sounds like quite a job. Congratulations. Post some photos for us as you go, won't you?

It will indeed be quite a job! We're partially digging it into a hill, so there's a lot of soil to shift before we can even start.

That's awesome! Congrats! I'd like to apply for a few grants, but the house isn't in our name right now.. it's still in FIL's name. We're nervous about making any changes because we have bad credit and we're afraid we won't get a mortgage for ourselves to pay off the debt on the house.

Finances are always such a balancing act. If you do this it might affect that. I hate it!

Congratulations! So, have you started yet?! I haven't won or applied for any grants, but I think it's great that you've won one. Sometimes, I think it's nearly impossible to have great ideas, and be given a grant for it. At least now, I know that it is possible! And it happened to someone I (almost, relatively, virtually, etc.) know.

We have started, yes. As soon as got the news we spent a couple of days faffing about deciding on the exact location, then changing our minds about fifty times. Now we've actually started excavating though in order to make the foundation, and it's been a lot of work already. It will be set into a hillside, so there's an awful lot of earth and rocks to be shifted. If we're lucky, we'll finish the excavation today and be able to move onto the next stage. Must remember to order materials first thing when businesses open.

Hi, Nice to have something like that. I understand it came from the government or from a private institution. I haven't been granted one even if I applied for some a while back. It was about a patrol boat and accessories for use in our coastal resource management program. Maybe it takes more than a proposal to get one approved.

I'm so happy for you and your happy. It would be awesome to win a grant. We have never won anything like that but if there was something we needed it for it would be great to get something like that. I think that everyone who qualifies for things like that should get the assistance they need.

This was a private grant, made annually to just one farm. It wasn't based on financial need, but how they perceived the idea fitted into their vision. I'm very pleased!
