How can you define a "black sheep" of the family? Or I can say black sheep of the society? People can easily say that you are a black sheep if you question some things that they can't even explain. Some define it that these are people who don't follow the wants of their parents. The term black sheep has given boundaries to those young ones to explore things in the world. The sad part is, those people who are afraid to be called black sheep, are those who just following what is the trend without further explanation and they limit themselves to do the things that they dream on.

My cousin and I were once talking about some family issues. Then all of a sudden, he mentions that our younger uncle was the black in the family. And in his own family, his older brother was the black sheep. And then he asked me, "Are you the black sheep of your family?" My initial reaction was I laughed hard. But then when I thought about it, I then thought, that maybe I was. Coz among the 3 of us sibling, it was I whom my mom had issues while I was growing up.

Originally, black sheep are those who are stubborn and don't follow the authority. But what if a child is defending his principle and belief to his family, and his family disowned him because of that reason, can you still consider him as a black sheep?

If one does his own thing or does not see things as others don within the family, the person is usually referred to as one.
