Saturday staff

When I was sixteen years old I did a Saturday job in shop called Super Drug. Today I was at a garden center with my two young children. A lady asked to buy a hamster. She wanted to wait until later because the hamster was sleeping. The Saturday shop assistant said that he wouldn't reserve it for her. Not one of the Saturday staff wanted to catch the hamster. One of them said that variety of hamster was lovely to look at but bit. Another of them got a cardboard tube to catch the hamster. The lady said she was going to name the hamster Darwin. Did you work at a Saturday job in your teenage years? What do you think of the staff's attitude?

Something similar happened to me this morning. I took my teenage son to a bicycle shop to get some kind of spare parts for the bike he is rebuilding. Apparently, one of the part was not in stock and needed to be ordered. But none of the two weekend staff there knew how to do it. So at the end, they told my son to come back during the weekday...

It seems that you had a similar experience to me. It was a pity the bike shop didn't have the item in stock. Having to order it and then come back on a weekday would be annoying. Even more bothersome were the two weekend staff not sure how to make an order. Let us hope the week staff know what they are doing.

I think the two weekend staff are just casual workers. They may not be trained for everything about running the store. The more senior workers or owners may prefer to work on week days only; but I think they should have at least one staff who knows everything to be available on all business hours including weekends so not to inconvenient customers.

Well, that does take us back a bit, doesn't it? Did you like your job back then & how long did it last? When I was in my late teens, I just arrived in this city & didn't know the place at all. It looked quite big & daunting. So I got a job delivering pizzas (whilst I was studying electronic engineering at the same time). It was very busy at the time & it allowed me to get out & learn about all the roads & back-streets & people. It meant I had to be available late at nights (sometimes until 2am.) & on the weekends too. The money was actually much better then than what I've been earning at any time in this job for the past 17+ years! I think staff should try to be more flexible in these difficult economic times.

Yes, unfortunately it's a sign of the times. Many employees, including me have had our hours cut back by a day or more a week without pay, just to keep our jobs or the company goes broke. Thank you for sharing.

Hi maximax8, I did work in the kitchen of a nearby club during my middle school holidays. The chef and cooks there were good in cooking. Some of the dishes and desserts prepared were really yummy. I'm happy that I hadn't miss the opportunity to learn how to make curry puff and several delicious dishes. My family members really enjoy the dishes and desserts I prepare for them nowadays. It's great to earn some pocket money and learn something during our free time when young Happy posting

I had that opportunity just because the chef is my dad's good friend. He was an amiable and hospitable person I know him since my very young age. I appreciate him as well as his cooking skill Really, I have gained a lots spending time in making pocket during my middle school days. What is worthy most is the skill of preparing my favorite dishes. This benefit my loved and close ones as well

I believe it is great to earn some pocket money and learn something new in the teenage years. That time is something a young person can put on his or her curriculum vitae. It was great that you worked in a kitchen alongside the chef. It was excellent that you learned to prepare really yummy puddings in today's world for your family. Excellent.

I see that you joined the military when you were 17 years old. That was quite young I believe. I think the staff at that garden center need to change their attitude. Just imagine is a person asks to buy a bird.

When I started work it was when I was 12 years old and it wasn't always on the weekends. I did soccer games and made good money doing so. Then when I was 17 i go another job one in the mall working in a clothing store. I worked there after school me on the weekends. Not the best money either but it was a start.

Hi Shy Bear. I am glad that you made good money with the soccer games. Age 12 years old was really young. I see that you worked in a clothing store when you were 17 years old. Sometimes shop staff get a discount on goods.

Yes I did get a discount about 20 to 30% of and we couldn't get a discount on clearances. But I didn't buy much because everything in there was expensive and it was more of a jean store. Have you heard of American Eagle. Jeans there can be pricey. I was only making $7.25 an hour.

The staff attitude was all wrong, when customers want something, the staff person is suppose to get it for them, don't these people know, with out their customers, they don't have job, because they are a paying customers, no I never worked at a garden center, but I did have a job working, at the Williamsburg Potter, when I got out of High school.

It was great that you had a job at the Williamsburg Potter when you got out of high school. Yes, the staff all had the wrong sort of attitude. I wonder if the staff in the week are better.

I never had a Saturday job in my teenage years, mainly because I had my own little gardening business which I built up from scratch, it started with a friend's neighbour and I did a couple of hours for her, then word got around and all these old ladies wanted me to garden for then, I didn't charge much. 2.50 an hour when you compare that to what they charge per hour nowadays, my neighbour has a gardener who charges 12.00 an hour, can you believe that? I also did a paper round every Wednesday evening.

I think there are really times that staffs got bored with their jobs that they are already lazy of helping customers.

How is a garden center allowed to sell hamsters? Someone needs to alert the RSPCA.

They are selling hamsters, gerbils, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and fish along with hamsters. I think the hamster was going to a loving owner luckily.
