Paleo Diet on a Budget

We've got some volunteers here at the moment who follow a no carbs diet which is very similar to a paleo diet. I've never cooked paleo before so I've been looking at recipes this morning. A diet without carbs strikes me as being very expensive, as the carbs are often the 'bulk' in a meal (pasta, rice, bread etc). We eat very little meat, and I'm unwilling to change that. Is there such as thing as a vegetarian paleo diet? Has anyone got any tips for me as to how to produce low cost carbohydrate free meals? I'm currently just serving the carbs separately so that those who want them can take them, but it doesn't seem to leave them with a very inspiring meal. Have you tried a paleo diet yourself? How did you feel? Was it a health or preference lead choice?

I have no idea but according to my research when I was considering Atkins diet and others, they are going to wreak havoc on their kidneys and even endanger their health. Ketosis is a real danger. Ketones are formed when the liver exhausts its stores of fat because there are no carbohydrates. Too many ketones in the blood is toxic and can damage the organs. The brain gets its energy from glucose, which is formed from carbohydrates. These people are playing with fire. You certainly have some strange people that visit you!! That's a very costly diet and I hope you charge them accordingly.

We don't charge them at all, hence my keenness to keep the costs down! They suggested I buy pumpkin seeds for them yesterday and I'm afraid I refused as they were just so expensive for a tiny pack which would have been exclusively for them as it was too small to share. I think everyone can eat what they want in their own homes, but it might be sensible to be flexible when travelling unless you have strong ethical reasons or allergies. This is by far the most expensive diet I have come across.

I have never heard of no carbs diet. What a strange eating habit! They say it uses mainly animal source foods .I don't hold with it,because it is not good for health. We need a balanced diet and not a single one of fat, protein and carbohydrate can be dispensed with. You seem to be faced with the knotty problem of preparing no carbs foods for them.I don't think there is paleo diet on a budget, you know what they need is meat, fish ,eggs and the like. They wouldn't even earn enough to pay what they eat,If they were elsewhere.

They claim to feel much better for their diet, but I do believe that everyone's body is different and what works for one may not work for another. Personally it's not a diet I would want to stick to for too long as I believe that health comes from variety.

Never heard of a paleo diet.

I'd heard of it, but never investigated before. It's costly as it's very heavy on animal products with very few carbs which for most of us act as 'filler'.

Heya GM., It says where I am reading about this paleo diet that all kinds of meat that the cavemen used to eat and some greenstuff and a bit of fruit and nuts and that´s it. No mention of rice and legumes or anything like that or milk. Does sound very expensive oh and it also includes butter as well no margarine at all not even that buttery tasting stuff they have out. It reckons that all kinds of things like legumes, rice, pasta are not natural for our system at all and they wreak havoc and cause lots of sickness. Well if that is so how come caveman had arthritis then lol? I can´t put the link here as its all commercial stuff so that is not on. It just makes you wonder when you read this is how they can really get to you with all this diet stuff what´s right and what is wrong. I ask you what are legumes for then just for pea shooting and nuffin else? Nuff said I am taking all this with a sense of humour because I think you have to. Eggs are the basic part of this diet and some kinds of fish and shellfish too again very expensive. What to do? Just slipped up again there is a vegetarian paleo diet is almonds, walnuts, advocado, broccoli, potatoes, spinach, pistachios wow this is a luxury to say the least they are saying that all the rest is poison. So if other countries have lived off rice all their life how come they have got to live for 100 years? Crazy man crazy I am just sticking to a bit of this and that and not over doing it my safest food map out. Too much of one thing can cause you to lose far too much body weight and that could be equally bad for anyone too.xxx

They suggested I should buy them some pumpkin seeds when I was shopping yesterday. At 5.50 for a teeny tiny little packet, I don't think so. I think people can eat what they like, but it's rather unreasonable to have too many 'preferences' when away from home.

Heya GM, Seeing as potatoes are on "their list" and also green stuffs like Cabbage and eggs there are several variations you can do there. Me I would put a ton of potatoes with boiled eggs or do egg and chips but that is too much work for so many people. Pumpkin seeds are way to expensive anyway. I know cheese and potato pie now that is something you can make tons of just don´t overdo the cheese bit you can always add a kind of cheese that agrees with them into the oven and away with them and the cabbage or other as side plates. I think that they should give and take when they are somewhere else and should not really expect other people to cater for that kind of thing. If I was in your place and you put fish I would eat fish without complaining well that´s because I would realize you have enough to do and I really don´t like fish but I would eat it out of respect for the other person.xxx

It is an expensive way to eat as the carbohydrates make up much of the bulk of our meals. I'm replacing them with huge bowls of salads just now, but that lacks variety.
