Hey guys,I was doing some work on my computer when my screen suddenly my screen went wild.It started showing blue and green pixels like we used to get on the old 16-bit video game consoles when the cartridge was not inserted properly.I searched on the internet and found that they are called artifacts.I thought it was a problem with my graphics card so i removed it and switched to the onboard chip. The problem dissapeared. But when i reconnected to the graphics card it returned. Now i really need my GPU to play games which my onboard chip can't handle.Should I throw my card away and buy a new one or is there any other solution?

Hi Greyfalcon, I think the graphics card cannot be repaired if it is faulty. Even if it can be repaired it's probably not worth the cost. So it's better that you get a new graphics card with a warranty instead. However, perhaps you could give it one more try before you throw away the card i.e. remove the card and use a contact cleaner to clean the contacts on the graphics card and the copmputer slot itself. Sometimes that may work if the contacts are dirty. No harm trying but remember to switch off the power before you start cleaning. Good luck and have a nice day.

What kind of contact cleaner should I use? Is it easily available in stores?

You'll just need a simple pencil eraser, yes an eraser is a good contact cleaner of electronic devices, be it video card, memory modules (ram) or even game cartridges. Just wipe off the residue of the eraser after rubbing it to the contacts. You can try, but your problem is really more serious and a temporary fix like reheating and reballing are your options aside from buying a brand-new card.

Hi Greyfalcon and Ghajini, Yes, I do use a simple pencil eraser at times and I usually follow up by using a contact cleaner (which you can buy at any DIY store or Radio Shack or similar store - just ask the sales personnel to recommend). Then I use a lint free cloth to rub the contacts again. I may be paranoid but it usually works well for me. Have a nice day.

Well, I think the solution is to try to clean the graphic card first with eraser. Yeah you read it right. I have the same problem with my graphic card, so I try to use a clean eraser (the one you use to erase pencil mark on paper). It’s worked. I don’t know if that will apply to your case. But you may can try it before buying the new one.
