It was a hot issue because it aims to add years to the basic education before reaching college. It was an issue because of the undeniably legitimate issues of education such as lack of classrooms, teachers, books, chairs, etc. It was an issue because it means an additional expenses (burden)for the struggling parents of our dear students. Just recently, I have watched a news on TV. The CHED is actually planning to reduce the number of years for basic subjects in college from 2 years to 1 year. The reason is that some basic subjects are already in the additional years in high school. I wonder, why is it that they add years in high school and reduce years in college to have the same number of years as with the present system. They said that the purpose of additional years is to make students more competent by equipping them with more knowledge in additional subjects. But the overall result is just the same. I don't understand much!

I do not know what ched suddenly decided to lessen the number of years in college. I do understand the situation in basic education where the need to add two more years is important. We are the only country in Asia that offers a 10 year basic education course. Most Private and exclusive schools does have additional one year in elementary plus they have pre school years thus if you would notice students in those private schools that have extra year in elementary does have and edge when they get to college as compared to a public school graduate. So what our government did was to add Kinder and added another year in HS to have Kinder to Grade 1-6 as Elementary and Grade 7-12 as Middle School and High School before they can enter for college. Nice concept but right now this is all in its initial stages that is why we could not see the results of this one yet in the Philippine setting. But K-12 concept has sense since the needs of the children to be educated and needs more time right now since technology of the times demand for a more skillful that is at par with the times.

Pragmatism. We'll see how effective this is, 10 to 15 years from now. I feel sorry for the students and their parents who will be affected by this. They will be like "experimental guinea pigs" for this government's experiments. Let's see the results after 10 to 15 years. That's how life works.

I think it is high time that our educational system be accelerated. The program of the government this time is just one of the ways to instill change for the good of the students. I had been to other countries in Asia and Philippines is really behind when it comes to education because of the shortened secondary years. I also applied in western countries and one of the questionable qualification is the educational program I had had, meaning am short of 2 years in the secondary I like the educational program now whether the government is ready or not. Let them solve the problems associated with the program

Children needs to have a better foundation in the lower level to help them to be a lot prepared with their chosen courses when they step into College. And I think that placing some of the basic subjects from College within the High School Curriculum would be a big help. We are aware that not all high school graduates are able to pursue a College education. But if they have better foundation now with the help of the adjustment, they will have more chances of finding work with greater knowledge.

I could only guess but I think that the aim is that people or students don't rely too much on their college education for their future careers or devote more time to the core subjects of the course. If you reduce the subjects in a four or five year course, it makes a difference when it comes to the duration of the study and money. After all, would you like to pay double for a subject that you already taken up in high school and then take up again in college? usually, these subjects were Basic education courses and they were there to give people a wholesome mix of education. If these courses will be eliminated, the course gets more specialization, which can be a good thing for the students.

As far as I know the purpose of k - 12 to be focused on enhancing skills rather than cognitive knowledge... As we can see the basic problem that the philippines have is the bulk number of unemployed graduates and unemployed undergraduates..Based on studies, one of the reasons of such unemployment is the of practical knowledge of those graduates, thus k-12 is introduced for us to be competitive..

I am not sure if the K12 Educational System will work for us, because as far as I understand it, it is patterned after the Western Educational System, and I contend that our traditional educational system is workable, if all the ones responsible, such as DECS, CHED, DOST, et al, will make it work. Anyway, the K12 had been implemented, so it is better if everyone wills it to succeed. The purpose of the K12, if I may surmise, is to filter the students hoping to get to college but, for one reason or another, like lack of intelligence, or lack of finances, cannot do so. At least, when given enough subjects in high school, the perspective of the students are broadened, and they could determine which field they want to pursue. The only setback I see is that soon, less students will go for college, and our universities may suffer. I hope not, for we have real good teachers in our universities.
