My teenage granddaughter has lots of anxiety and other emotional problems. I noticed that she is getting bald on one side of her head. I was told this is due to her anxiety. Has anyone heard of this problem and if it causes losing one's hair?

Your teenage granddaughter's loss of hair, medically known as alopecia, takes various forms. Male or female pattern baldness, in which hair begins to thin at the crown and the hairline recedes, is the most common; it is primarily genetic in origin and primed by the presence of androgens (male hormones). The exact sequence of the hair-loss process is not yet fully understood, but it is clear that everyone loses scalp hair as he or she gets older; it is equally clear that some people's tendency to lose hair at an accelerated rate, and to start at a relatively early age, is inherited. In general, there is nothing you can do yourself to stop or delay this natural process. In a woman, the elimination of excessive male hormones may help, but this approach requires careful evaluation by an expert in endocrine disorders.

Yes I've heard of this situation before. In fact, I have a friend who is suffering from mental disorder, and she seems to be losing a lot of hair all over and now she is going bald already. Every time I meet her I can see her scalp through her thin coating of hair. I think maybe the reason of hair falling is due to an excess of stress. Your granddaughter is having anxiety, so with it comes a lot of stress. It happens you know, so I hope you don't worry much. However, it is best to take her to a doctor so that she can get the right treatment for her anxiety issues. Anxiety can be treated with medication, but if you feel that medication can do harm for her in the long term, perhaps you might want to try C.B.T. or cognitive behavioral therapy. You can ask about this from your doctor. Also, you can also try exposure therapy for her. This therapy requires a patient to deal with her fears, let her be exposed to her fears to an extreme extent, but make sure that you do it slowly and not rushing into the extreme all of a sudden. I hope my suggestion helps. Have a nice day!

Yes, I know someone personally who suffered anxiety and become bald. Psoriasis is also caused by too much stress and anxiety. We need to help them on this battle- they need extra attention, love and care.

I have been through some difficult issues in the past. And I have noticed that my hair was falling off. I got scared. Then I read online that having anxiety could really affect my hair. Then as months went by, when I have somehow started to pick up the pieces again. My hair became healthier.

I personally experienced that before . Its called alopecia . I got that due to my depression on giving birth to my child while his father is not with me. We went to a dermatologist to ask a medical advice. She just gave me advices because she said that alopecia has no cure. She told me to always think positive and dont be stressful . I followed her and i also use aloe vera on the baldness and my hair starts to grow back .
