Would you go to live on Mars permanently?

I just heard about this , and I thought it was a joke at first. I wouldnt even dream of leaving my family to go to live on another planet forever. I just cannot understand how people would be interested in doing such a thing, other than the fact that they are desperately lonely and want to get away from their current life forever. What do you think?

Unless earth has been permanently destroyed and cannot be inhabited anymore, I would not prefer to live in Mars. The earth is more beautiful, I think...I've read about Mars, and I don't think I like it. But if someday we already have the means to, I think it would be great to explore Mars or any other planet. Sort of like a tour or a trip.

When you mentioned a tour I thought of Dr. Who! That's exactly the sort of episode they would have for that series...lol.

i've heard about this too. and what amazed me is the cheap application fee. honestly, i ask myself what if i'll apply? go there and leave the people who caused me pain. but then i thought, the pain would go away as time goes by. if i'm there, and the pain is gone, what would i do? i will surely miss my family, especially my daughter. the idea was stupid. i don't want to be the scientist's guinea pig.

I don't think it is possible for earthlings to live in Mars yet, there are still many scientific questions remain that need to be answered before human being can live forever on planet Mars. The near possibility for people in the future is to live few months or a year long in Mars is no doubt a reality , not just a dream provided scientists manage to find out the solutions of some immediate problems like overcoming the lack of oxygen, low atmosphere pressure; extreme cold temperature, no water source etc..for human survival. Most of the people who are interested to live in Mars normally are not just ordinary people, many of them are also explorers, adventurers, astronauts, academicians, and scientists who are willing to make personal sacrifices for the advancement of knowledge and science in space for the sake of a greater good to mankind in the future, it is somethings not many people can understand well and will appreciate, doing such 'thing' usually also means putting their own life at risk to venture into the unknown territory of our solar system for the sake of all humanity on earth.

When I was thinking of moving to Puerto Rico I took a vacation first to see if I would like it. I stayed for about three weeks and I loved it. I knew this was where I belonged. So for me going to mars to live I would have to check it out first to see if I would like it. You say I wouldn't dream of leaving my family, however, why can't you take your family with you? If my husband and I decided to visit mars and we loved it and it was better then earth with all its crimes and wars etc... I would defintely move there. Of course it all depends on what kind of life we would have and what it has to offer us.

No, it is hard enough living on this planet at time. The only way I would go is if everyone had to transport there because Earth was in danger becoming non-existent.

From my views on reading at that planet, I think I would like it, because hopefully I could set up the new life of that planet, hire some family members, and friends to join and start the new life outside earth. The moon is also good choice.

Since I was a kid, I have been interested in the space. However, if you ask me to live in the Mars permanently. I will say no. Since I can't come back to the earth any more. And it is likely that you have to live in Mars until you die. I feel very lonely and sad because of it. I still have many friends and family members in the earth. I haven't traveled around the world yet. I don't want to leave from my planet forever. The earth is my home.

You are referring to the planned expedition to establish a colony on Mars that after an eight year period of training is supposed to leave in 2022 if I'm remembering right. I can't remember the company's name or the country they are in. It is intriguing to some of us who have long had an interest in space and other planets. I am to old to even consider it now and I would only do it if family could and would be going also. But when you think about it, it is not all that different from the early colonists to America except many of them were escaping oppression. But many of them weren't. They were leaving home for, as far as they knew, ever and going to an unknown and possibly hostile place. So I can see people doing because the urge to explore still exists.

I wouldn't go to live on Mars even if there were already people living there, even if there were communities. And I wouldn't even remotely consider doing it permanently. As far as someone being desperately lonely, I believe they would realize their mistake once they got there. If they were the only person on Mars then they REALLY WOULD BE desperately lonely. I think in order to live on Mars permanently one would have to have a pioneering spirit and I certainly don't have that. But, the biggest reason why I wouldn't want to live on Mars is that it isn't Earth. Most everyone has seen the pictures transmitted from the Mars probes. It's a barren place. Think of all the earth has to offer us. We have beautiful blue skies, majestic mountains, vast oceans, fields of green, forests, and even our deserts have a beauty that Mars can't compare to. And think of all the animal life we have to enjoy here. I think we focus so much on all the gloom and doom and daily problems in our world that we forget to enjoy the beauty that is all around us. Would I leave this planet that God in His wisdom saw fit to put me on and go live on Mars? Nope. I wouldn't trade earth for anything.

I would do it, but not alone (and not at the risk of being alone)---i.e. maybe if there was either a community established-&-thriving there already, or a community of people willing to go there & establish a neighborhood-network there.

I don't like the idea of leaving family - but if families could go there to colonize and be pioneers of a sort, that would be interesting. I'm always up for a new adventure and getting away! Perhaps you are viewing it wrong - maybe they are not desperately lonely - but rather, fulfilled, have loving relationships - and feel they can carry the love with them as they become pioneers in space. No doubt there will be ways to communicate with loved ones left behind. People leave families for a variety of reasons, often good ones - which involve growth and evolving as people - going away to college, for example, or the military. A spouse might take a "mini-break" vacation away from the loved one(s) in order to regroup and relax a bit - coming home a refreshed spouse and parent. I guess it's all in one's perspective?

I would love to go and live in Mars permanently, provided I can take my loved ones too. I am kinda done building and nurturing relationships for this life. So if I have opportunity to take my loved ones and go I would love to...
