A Matter Of Opinion

Something interesting just crossed my mind, while listening to CKWR.com with my husband. We always listen to CKWR on Sundays, because of the international programs. Noon-1 German, 1-2 Romanian, 2-3:30 Croatian, 3:30-5 Irish, 5-7 Serbian. Now I have no idea why they put Irish between Croatian and Serbian. Personally, I'd have put the two programs back to back. I can tell a definite difference between Croatian and Serbian music, but regionally they are very close, and one can nicely transition into the other. I also happen to like those programs better than the Irish one. I suppose this is where "a matter of opinion" comes in. At the end of the Irish program there was a great song, with a wonderful poetic message, but a very repetitive melody. One woman singing, almost acapella. There may have been a guitar, but I can't remember. I just remember thinking "I'm BORED!!!" OK nothing against Irish music, and it's not all like that, but for me in particular, my "gift" is in hearing music in a really thorough way. The Serbian program came on after that, and the song was also acapella, but there were probably a hundred voices, doing about 10 different things. The different vocal parts made up the orchestra, and some were doing rhythem, some were doing chorts, some were singing the melody, and not only cold I make out the words, even if Serbian isn't my first lnguage, and I coudln't exactly "understand" them, I could follow what every single voice was doing. Every vocal sound of a lyric, and every individual note that each part was singing. It was AWESOME! A real production!!!!! Personally, this is what music is to me. For the simpler things, one vocal and a guitar, I can just as easily crack open a book of poetry, and read it on my own. While lyrics are nice sometimes (on the Croatian song Ivan played a song in English about Croatia that was really nice!), in my opinion it's more about the music. I have perfect pitch, and can play by ear. With my 10 fingers, I could sit down at a piano, and follow the 10 parts of the Serbian song I just heard. What are your thoughts on music? Simple with poetic lyrics, or elaborate with lyrics that are optional? 80% of the music that i have in my collection is in a foreign language in which I am not fluent. I'm starting to pick up words here and there from songs I know well, but only about 20% of my collections, mostly Rock and Roll from the 50's, has lyrics that are in my native language.

I love all kinds of music and listen according to my mood at the time. I have a huge collection of cd's that are all kinds of dfferent music. I've always loved to sing, but haven't the voice I once had in my younger years. My kids used to ask me to sing for them and I've been told I have a nice voice. But I do enjoy many different kinds of music, but am not familiar with music from different languages, as you are!! I do enjoy musicals but have found that some I thought I LOVED, I don't like as well any more!
