I noticed that one of my favorite things to do is to learn a new language. But I don't have a reason for it. If you have a second language can you tell me why you know it or why you chose to learn it?

i took 3 years of spanish class in school...(the first because i needed a foreign language credit for graduation, the other two because i enjoyed it) unfortunately i have not had much use/practice of it after high school. it is on my bucket list for when i have time to study something again. would love to brush up on my spanish and travel somewhere that i could put it to use....

You can have different reasons to learn a new language. Perhaps one of the most important is that you need it because you want to start a study in a foreign country. Another reason is because you like it and so you will gain knowledge about other people and cultures. Further you can need it because of a new job you want to get.

I learned French at school, I even took an 'O' level in it (and failed!). French here was traditional - our royalty spoke in French. France is of course only 200 miles away, but I've never used it and it has got in the way of my learning other languages. I've tried to learn German (I was visiting) and Welsh (a neighbour) without sucess. 'Thankyou' should be easy, yes? Well in French it's 'merci', in Welsh or German, I say 'thanks' my mind is blank!

my first language is chinese. i felt in love with english sice The first english lesson in primary school. and later i studied a little french.. i think the process of learning a new language is quite fun. because you get to know another culture, maybe an entirely different one. language is a symbol of culture.

I learn English as my second language because in China it's a compulsory course in school. It's really practical. And there is always somthing surprise you when you learn something new.

In fact I never think of the reason for learning English as a second language. English is one of the necessary courses for every Chinese student, as a result I had to start learning English when I was 12 years old. Unfortunately I found I never interest in English. But recently I found learning English bring me happiness and I desire to learn English well.
