Is Music Necessary to push and motivate a person ?

Do you find that music is necessary for you to push yourself? Do you always take your iPod/phone and earphones to the gym, or are you content with motivating yourself? I always exercise without music, primarily because I do not have good earphones that stay in my ears. For me, music would definitely be beneficial, especially if you listen to songs that are geared for a single purpose: to motivate the listener. But even without music, I can push myself to put in more effort. What are your thoughts/experiences?
