The best way to find and make friends is to post discussions about topics which interest you. Hopefully, people will respond and 'follow' you and you can go to their profile and 'follow' them back. 'Following' means that, when you make a post or a response or a comment, they will get a notification and can then respond or comment. You can also use the Private Messaging system to send a personal message.
