You can also buy small pots of herbs and vegetables that are ready to plant, and much faster than seeds, which take some time to get established. The majority of these plants like full sun, rich soil. Leave plenty of space between plantings, ie, tomatoes, squash, zucchini-at least 3-4 feet. For example, a great herb is lavender, and even the compact varieties will need, with time a 3x3 foot area. Get a few herb books from the library or bookstore-they are inspiring and some are easy to follow for a beginner.
