Getting a Job as an Artist

As a graduate in Art, I am always up for a commission by an person interested in obtaining a painting. Yet, it seems whenever I am offered the opportunity to create a work of art for someone, they don't think they need to pay for my service. How does that make sense, and how is that fair? When we, as humans, cannot do things we hire other people to do those things. We want the toilet fixed; we hire a plumber. We want a different hair cut, we hire a hairdresser. No, I didn't go to college and learn how to perform open heart surgery or how to repair a car, but I did spend four years of my life pursuing my education of art. I believe that entitles me to be compensated for my work. I am always proud of my art work and I know what I deserve. I hope people stop looking down on artists in the future.

Of course you should be compensated! Artists are professional and their works can sometimes give people serenity which is a really good feeling.

Don't settle for less! You are probably a very talented artist and your efforts are worth more then they're giving you.

I agree that artists should get compensation. I've seen this kind of thing before. I am not so sure, that people don't want to pay, but that they think they don't have to pay. Hope that makes sense? A plumber or a wall painter will give an estimate as to how much the repair will cost or the work will not be produced. Artists tend not to that? Marketing art is not an easy task though but an art form in itself?

That is what I mean though; just because artists don't have set prices, doesn't give people the right to assume it's free labor. Also, an artist could give an estimate after a commission is discussed as far as size, medium, etc.

@chloeadrianne I do agree the creator should be rewarded. I also thought in addition that when asking for money everything is a market and works the same way. If the buyer can get a cheaper/better product they will. It is up to the seller to convince the buyer that their product is the best buy for them.
