That's what I call mashed potatoes. I've never heard of making mashed potatoes and not adding milk and butter to them. Aren't they really dry if you don't do that?

Yes they are very dry and also lumpy.I have seen people add milk and butter. Then they would use a mixer.I quess thats why I would call them whipped potatoes.

hmmmm. I guess it's just a matter of terminology. Around here we always do use a mixer on our mashed potatoes and thus they are whipped. I've never seen whipped potatoes on a menu.

What I call mashed potatoes are potatoes that I've used a masher for (not an electic mixer), and whipped potatoes are highly aerated potatoes, which I'd use an electric mixer or whisk for. To me, it doesn't really matter whether I use butter or milk. I do usually add butter, but I rarely add milk because of family allergies/sensitivities.

That's a good point. Although you are still mashing the potatoes so it would be considered mashed potatoes that are whipped. Maybe I'll start calling in whipped potatoes. Just to see how many family members look at me funny.

Adding milk and butter doesn't really change the fact that they are mashed potatoes.

Technically it's in the preparation, not in the ingredients. "Mashed" potatoes are literally mashed with a potato masher, a kitchen implement that you might find in your Great Grandmothers' kitchen. If you use a blender then technically they are 'whipped', though I can't imagine why anyone would get caught up on the semantics :-)
