Hdmi splitter and hdmi switch , which one is fit for me ?

I don't what i need an is an hdmi splitter or hdmi switch ? I'm planning to use a custom gaming pc to output a signal from my video card between a hdtv and a monitor in a different room. I will not be using both screens at the same time. I'm thinking I will need an hdmi splitter and I would like to confirm if I am correct or wrong. If the signal is outputting from the video card, it is inputting into an hdmi splitter which can then output into two monitors ? What is difference of hdmi splitter and hdmi switch ?
