It wasn’t until late 16th century; window curtains came into existence in England. Bed and door curtains were more popular than window curtains in 15th century. Curtain materials were traditionally made of silk, linen and mixed fibers during this period. In 17th century, shutters gained more popularity over curtains. This century was marked by the major innovation of pull-up curtains. Affluent class preferred using contrasting and dark, rich colors in their window curtains. The baroque decorating style got a big success in 17th century for its luxury effect. The baroque curtains featured printed with curved motifs. The patterned style of baroque curtains looked elegant because of the combination of classic style with a little bit of modernity.
Now with the globalization and standardization of interior design, there is a new trend of classic designs with a modern twist, which is called contemporary design.
